How to Read AIS and Form 26AS

Understand AIS, TIS, and Form 26AS on the income tax portal. Spot TDS mismatches before you file ITR.

By HowDoI India TeamLast updated: 30 August 2026

AIS (Annual Information Statement) and Form 26AS are your tax department's view of money linked to your PAN. Reading them before you file saves refund delays and defective-return notices. This guide shows where to find them and how to reconcile salary, interest, and TDS lines.

Where to open AIS and 26AS

  1. Log in at incometax.gov.in.
  2. Go to Services / Annual Information Statement (AIS).
  3. Open Form 26AS from the e-filing services menu for the same financial year.
  4. Select the relevant FY and download PDF or JSON if you want an offline copy.

IMPORTANT

Check the correct financial year. Filing for AY 2026-27 means you reconcile FY 2025-26 information.

What Form 26AS shows

Form 26AS is still the cleanest place to verify:

  • TDS on salary (Section 192)
  • TDS on interest, rent, property, professional fees
  • TCS collected by sellers
  • Advance tax and self-assessment tax challans
  • Some refund entries

If Form 16 Part A TDS does not appear here, the employer likely has not filed or matched the TDS return yet.

What AIS adds

AIS groups information in parts such as:

  • Salary and TDS details
  • Interest from banks and deposits
  • Dividend and securities transactions
  • Property purchase / sale related reporting
  • Foreign remittance related feedback (when reported)
  • GST related turnover information for businesses

TIS rolls these into a summary that may prefill ITR utilities.

How to reconcile in practice

  1. Salary: Match employer TAN lines in 26AS with Form 16. Sum multiple employers.
  2. Interest: Banks often report interest even if below taxable limit. Include it in ITR if earned.
  3. Stocks and mutual funds: AIS may show gross values that are not your taxable gain. Use broker reports for actual capital gains computation.
  4. Property: Check 26QB TDS if you sold property. Buyer TDS should appear against your PAN.
  5. Tax paid: Confirm every challan in 26AS before claiming credit in ITR.

TIP

Download AIS, mark doubtful rows, and submit feedback inside the portal. Keep screenshots of submitted feedback with the acknowledgement.

Using feedback options

Typical feedback choices include:

  • Information is correct
  • Information is not correct (enter suggested value)
  • Income is not taxable / duplicate
  • Information does not belong to me

Submit feedback early. Corrections from the reporting entity can take time to refresh in AIS.

Common red flags

  • Salary in AIS much higher than Form 16
  • TDS credit in Form 16 missing from 26AS
  • Interest from a closed joint account still reported fully in your PAN
  • Share sale reported without matching purchase cost (expected; compute gains yourself)
  • Old employer's TAN still showing after you left (can be valid for that FY)

Practical weekly habit in February-March

In the busy filing months, open AIS once a week instead of once on the night before the deadline. New TDS rows appear as deductors file their returns. Catching a missing Form 16A from a bank in March is easier than explaining a defective return in August.

Also watch for duplicate interest reporting when you hold a joint account. Banks sometimes report the full interest against both PANs. Use AIS feedback and keep the joint account letter ready if the department asks later.

How ITR utilities use this data

Prefill in the official utility often reads TIS. If TIS shows a rounded or incomplete number, switch to detailed AIS and your own statements. You are responsible for the figures you submit, not for whatever prefill guessed. When AIS and your books disagree by a large amount, pause filing until feedback or a revised Form 16 lands.

Realistic timelines

Most people lose time waiting on OTP issues, unclear scans, or a portal outage rather than on the core form itself. Build a small buffer into your plans. If a visa, loan, or registration appointment depends on this document, start at least one or two weeks earlier than the brochure minimum.

Keep a folder (phone and laptop) with:

  1. Application / acknowledgment PDF
  2. Fee receipt or UTR
  3. Identity proofs used in the upload
  4. Screenshots of status pages with dates visible

When a helpdesk asks for proof, you should be able to send it in one email without hunting through WhatsApp.

If the portal is down

Official sites in India often slow down on weekday evenings and near due dates. Try early morning, switch browsers, or use a less congested network. Prefer the gov.in domain even when a third-party site claims to be faster. If money was debited without an acknowledgment, wait for the stated reconciliation window and contact the listed support channel with the bank reference before you pay again.

After you finish

Update every dependent record that still shows old data: DigiLocker, employer HRMS, bank KYC, insurer, and any travel profile. A finished application that never propagates to the places you actually use will feel unfinished the next time you need it in a hurry.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AIS and Form 26AS?
Form 26AS mainly shows TDS, TCS, and tax payments against your PAN. AIS is broader: it also lists interest, securities, property, GST turnover feedback, and other information reported by third parties.
What is TIS?
Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) is a processed summary derived from AIS. ITR prefilling often uses TIS values. Always open the detailed AIS when something looks wrong.
What if AIS shows income I never earned?
Use the feedback option on AIS to mark the entry as incorrect or not mine. Keep proofs ready. Do not blindly copy wrong AIS figures into your ITR.
Should ITR match AIS exactly?
Your return should explain the correct income. Small timing differences happen, but large unexplained gaps can trigger notices. Reconcile major TDS and high-value lines before filing.
