Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) Corpus

EPF is the mandatory retirement savings channel for most salaried employees in India. You and your employer each contribute 12% of basic wages (subject to wage ceiling rules), and EPFO declares an annual interest rate credited to member passbooks.

How to use this calculator

Keep four numbers ready: monthly basic plus DA, current age, existing EPF balance, and the latest EPFO interest rate. If you just started working, balance can be zero.

The tool splits employer share between EPF and EPS pension buckets. EPS does not appear in your passbook balance but affects pension eligibility after age 58.

Salary hikes matter. Enter expected annual increment if the calculator supports it so mid-career jumps reflect reality. Static salary understates corpus for growing careers.

Use the output to decide on Voluntary Provident Fund. VPF earns the same EPF rate but locks cash until retirement or eligible withdrawal. Compare projected EPF with NPS and PPF so retirement money is not all illiquid.

Download the annual EPFO passbook each March to reconcile employer deposits against this projection. Wage ceiling changes and special allowance restructuring can shift PF contributions mid-year without a salary cut on paper.

EPF contribution split

Employee: 12% of basic (+ DA) to EPF. Employer: 12% of basic (+ DA), of which 8.33% (capped) goes to EPS and the rest to EPF. Interest compounds monthly on balances and credits once a year. Example: ₹30,000 basic, 25 years to retirement, 8.25% rate, ₹2 lakh existing balance. Employee monthly EPF ≈ ₹3,600. Projected corpus often crosses ₹1 crore with moderate hikes, but your passbook is the source of truth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What data do I need before using the EPF calculator?

Monthly basic including DA, your age, current EPF balance from the passbook, expected retirement age, and the declared EPF interest rate for the year.

Does the calculator adjust when interest rates change?

Yes. Update the rate each year when EPFO announces it. Historical rates ranged roughly between 8.1% and 8.65% in recent years.

Is EPF interest tax-free?

Interest is tax-free if your annual contribution stays within ₹2.5 lakh. Above that, interest on the excess contribution is taxable from FY 2021-22 rules.

What is VPF?

Voluntary Provident Fund lets you contribute more than 12% of basic at the same EPF interest rate. It follows the same withdrawal rules as EPF.

When can I withdraw EPF?

Full withdrawal at retirement, after two months of unemployment, or partial withdrawal for housing, education, medical needs under EPFO rules.

Why does my passbook not match the estimate?

EPFO credits interest once annually. Mid-year passbook entries may show accrued interest differently until the annual credit date.

What is EPS?

Employee Pension Scheme receives part of the employer contribution. It funds pension after 58 if you meet minimum service norms, separate from the EPF balance you withdraw.

UAN and multiple employers?

One UAN links all EPF accounts across employers. Transfer old balances to the current employer account when switching jobs to keep compounding uninterrupted.
