If you filed your Income Tax Return (ITR) and the calculation showed you were owed a refund, the waiting game begins. The Income Tax Department has significantly sped up processing times over the last few years through the Centralized Processing Centre (CPC), but delays still happen depending on the complexity of your return.
There are two official ways to check your ITR refund status: through the Income Tax e-Filing portal (which is the most detailed method) and through the NSDL TIN portal.
Method 1: Check via the e-Filing Portal (Recommended)
This method provides the most detailed status of your entire return lifecycle, from filing to refund issue.
- Go to the Income Tax e-Filing portal.
- Log in using your PAN as the user ID and your password.
- On the dashboard, navigate to e-File > Income Tax Returns > View Filed Returns.
- Locate the correct Assessment Year (AY). (Note: Assessment Year is one year ahead of the Financial Year. For income earned in FY 2023-24, look for AY 2024-25).
- Click on View Details under the relevant year.
- The portal displays a visual timeline of your return:
- Filed -> e-Verified -> Processing -> Processing Completed.
- Below the timeline, check the specific status message regarding your refund (e.g., Refund Issued, Refund Failed).
Method 2: Check via the NSDL TIN Portal
If you don't have your e-Filing password handy, or you want to check the status quickly on the go, you can check the status using just your PAN and the Assessment Year on the NSDL portal.
- Visit the NSDL Refund Tracking portal.
- Enter your PAN in uppercase.
- Select the relevant Assessment Year from the dropdown menu.
- Enter the CAPTCHA code shown on the screen and click Submit.
- The screen will display the status of your refund, including the mode of payment (usually NECS/RTGS), the reference number, and the date of clearance when the money was sent to your bank.
Understanding Refund Status Messages
When you check the status, you might see one of these messages. Here is exactly what they mean and what action you should take:
| Status Message | Meaning | Action Required |
|---|---|---|
| Under Processing | CPC is still checking your ITR and cross-verifying it with Form 26AS. | Wait. No action needed at this stage. |
| Processed with no demand no refund | CPC processed the return but determined you are owed nothing, overriding your calculation. | Check the 143(1) intimation sent to your email to see why they adjusted your calculation (e.g., a disallowed deduction). |
| Refund Determined / Approved | CPC has approved the refund and sent the request to the SBI refund banker for disbursement. | Wait 5-10 days for the money to hit your bank account. |
| Refund Paid / Credited | The money has been transferred to your bank successfully. | Check your bank statement around the specified date. |
| Refund Failed | The transfer failed (usually due to KYC issues at the bank or a closed account). | Submit a Refund Reissue request on the portal immediately. |
| Adjusted against outstanding demand | Your refund was used to pay off an old tax debt you owed from a previous assessment year. | Verify the adjustment. If you disagree, you can file a rectification request. |
Pre-requisite for Getting a Refund: Bank Validation
The most common reason for delayed or failed refunds is an unvalidated bank account. The Income Tax Department will only send refunds to a pre-validated bank account linked to your PAN. They no longer send physical cheques by mail.

What to Do If Your Refund Fails
If the status shows "Refund Failed," it means the money bounced back from your bank to the tax department. You must manually request them to send it again.
- Go to the e-Filing portal and log in.
- Go to Services > Refund Reissue.
- Create a new request. Select the Assessment Year where the refund failed.
- The system will ask you to select a bank account to receive the money.
- Important: Select a different, fully validated bank account this time, or ensure you have fixed the root issue (like KYC suspension or name mismatch) with the current bank account and re-validated it on the portal.
- Submit the request and e-Verify it using Aadhaar OTP or net banking.
- The refund will be re-processed in 7 to 15 days.
