How to Generate e-Way Bill Online

Generate a GST e-way bill on the ewaybillgst.gov.in portal. Part A/B, validity distance rules, and common errors.

By HowDoI India TeamLast updated: 30 August 2026

An e-way bill is the electronic permit for moving goods under GST when the consignment value crosses the notified limit. Police and officers can ask for it during transit. Generate it on the official portal before the vehicle starts, and keep Part B updated if the vehicle changes mid-route.

Portal and login

  1. Go to ewaybillgst.gov.in.
  2. Register once with your GSTIN if you have not already (separate from the main GST portal password).
  3. Log in with the e-way bill credentials.

WARNING

Use only the official gov.in e-way bill site. Fake clones harvest GST passwords.

Details to keep ready

Details for e-way bill generation

Step 1: Generate Part A

  1. Choose Generate New e-way bill.
  2. Select outward / inward as applicable.
  3. Enter invoice details matching the tax invoice.
  4. Enter item HSN, qty, and values carefully.
  5. Submit Part A to get an e-way bill number generated with Part A only (movement still needs Part B in most cases).

Step 2: Fill Part B (vehicle / transporter)

  1. Enter vehicle number if you know the truck, or enter transporter ID so the transporter can update Part B.
  2. Without Part B, the bill may not be valid for movement.
  3. If the vehicle changes, update Part B on the portal with the new vehicle number.

TIP

Match invoice value and e-way bill value. Officers often check both documents together during roadside stops.

Step 3: Print / share and move goods

  1. Download PDF or show the e-way bill number digitally.
  2. Share with the driver and transporter.
  3. Monitor validity. Extend on the portal if transit will exceed the allowed hours/days for that distance band.

Common rejection / error cases

  • GSTIN cancelled or inactive
  • Incorrect pin code leading to wrong distance
  • Vehicle number format errors
  • Trying to generate after goods already reached (catch-up is risky)
  • Duplicate e-way bill for the same invoice without cancelling the first within allowed time

Cancellation and expiry

You can cancel an e-way bill within the permitted window if goods are not transported. After expiry, generate a fresh bill if movement is still required and rules allow. Do not circulate expired PDFs as if they were valid.

Multi-vehicle and consolidated bills

For transporters moving many consignments, consolidated e-way bill features exist so Part B updates are manageable. Suppliers should still ensure each invoice-level Part A is accurate. Handing a driver only a handwritten note without an e-way bill number is asking for detention.

Detention and document pouch

Keep in the cabin: tax invoice / delivery challan, e-way bill print or offline QR, and transporter copy. If officers detain goods, note the time, location, and notice number. Call your tax consultant early rather than arguing roadside for hours without documents.

Exemptions and job work

Some goods and movement types are exempt from e-way bills under notifications. Job work and bill-to-ship-to transactions have special fields. Mis-tagging a bill-to-ship-to as a simple supply creates address mismatches during checks. Train whoever generates bills daily, not only the chartered accountant who files monthly returns.

Realistic timelines

Most people lose time waiting on OTP issues, unclear scans, or a portal outage rather than on the core form itself. Build a small buffer into your plans. If a visa, loan, or registration appointment depends on this document, start at least one or two weeks earlier than the brochure minimum.

Keep a folder (phone and laptop) with:

  1. Application / acknowledgment PDF
  2. Fee receipt or UTR
  3. Identity proofs used in the upload
  4. Screenshots of status pages with dates visible

When a helpdesk asks for proof, you should be able to send it in one email without hunting through WhatsApp.

If the portal is down

Official sites in India often slow down on weekday evenings and near due dates. Try early morning, switch browsers, or use a less congested network. Prefer the gov.in domain even when a third-party site claims to be faster. If money was debited without an acknowledgment, wait for the stated reconciliation window and contact the listed support channel with the bank reference before you pay again.

After you finish

Update every dependent record that still shows old data: DigiLocker, employer HRMS, bank KYC, insurer, and any travel profile. A finished application that never propagates to the places you actually use will feel unfinished the next time you need it in a hurry.

Generally when moving goods above the notified value threshold (commonly Rs 50,000 for interstate; some states have their own intrastate rules). Check current notifications for your state and goods type.
Who generates the e-way bill?
Usually the supplier. The transporter or recipient can generate in allowed situations when the supplier has not.
What is Part A vs Part B?
Part A has GSTIN, invoice, and goods details. Part B has vehicle number / transporter details needed for movement to start.
How long is an e-way bill valid?
Validity depends on distance to be covered. You can extend validity in the portal before expiry if the journey continues.
