Udyam Registration is the free government MSME certification for micro, small, and medium enterprises in India. You apply only on the official portal at udyamregistration.gov.in. With the certificate you can access priority bank lending, lower interest rates in many cases, preference in government tenders, delayed-payment protection, and a 50% discount on trademark registration fees.
This walkthrough covers the government registration flow. Most people finish in about 15 minutes once Aadhaar OTP and PAN details are ready.
Why You Should Register (Even If You Think You Don't Need To)
Many small business owners skip MSME registration because they think it is unnecessary paperwork. Here is what you gain with an Udyam certificate:
| Benefit | Details |
|---|---|
| Priority Sector Lending | Banks are mandated by RBI to allocate a portion of their lending to MSMEs. Your loan application gets priority processing. |
| Collateral-free loans | Under the CGTMSE scheme, MSMEs can get loans up to ₹5 Crore without providing any collateral or third-party guarantee. |
| Lower interest rates | Banks often offer 1-2% lower interest rates to registered MSMEs compared to non-MSME borrowers. |
| Government tender preference | Many government procurement tenders are reserved exclusively for MSMEs, or MSMEs get a price preference of up to 15%. |
| Delayed payment protection | If a buyer delays payment beyond 45 days, you can file a complaint with the MSME Facilitation Council, and the buyer must pay compound interest at 3x the bank rate. |
| Trademark discount | 50% fee reduction on trademark registration (₹4,500 instead of ₹9,000). |
| ISO certification reimbursement | Up to ₹75,000 reimbursement for ISO certification costs. |
MSME Classification Thresholds (from 1 April 2025)
Your business is classified using both investment in plant and machinery or equipment and annual turnover. Both ceilings must be met for that category. These limits apply from 1 April 2025 (Ministry of MSME notification S.O. 1364(E) dated 21 March 2025):
| Enterprise Type | Investment in Plant & Machinery/Equipment | Annual Turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | Up to ₹2.5 crore | Up to ₹10 crore |
| Small | Up to ₹25 crore | Up to ₹100 crore |
| Medium | Up to ₹125 crore | Up to ₹500 crore |
Older limits (until 31 March 2025) were Micro ₹1 crore / ₹5 crore, Small ₹10 crore / ₹50 crore, and Medium ₹50 crore / ₹250 crore. If you already hold an Udyam certificate, the portal reclassifies you from your latest ITR and GST data under the new bands. You do not need to re-register only because the limits changed.
IMPORTANT
Udyam Registration on the government portal is free. Private sites that look similar (for example udyamregistration.org or msmeregistration.in) often charge ₹500-2,000 to "process" the same form. Use only udyamregistration.gov.in.
What You Need Before You Start
Documents and information required
0 of 6 ready · saved on this device only
Step 1: Open the Udyam registration government portal
Go to udyamregistration.gov.in. Check the address bar before you enter Aadhaar or PAN.
On the homepage, pick the option that matches you:
- "For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME or those with EM-II" if you have never registered.
- "For those already having registration as UAM through Udyog Aadhaar" if you need to migrate from the old Udyog Aadhaar.
Step 2: Authenticate with Aadhaar
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and your name exactly as printed on the Aadhaar card (including middle name, spelling, etc.).
- Click on Validate & Generate OTP.
- Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number to verify.
WARNING
The name you enter must match your Aadhaar character-for-character. "Suresh Kumar Verma" on Aadhaar cannot be entered as "S K Verma" or "Suresh Verma." If there is any mismatch, the OTP will not be generated.
Step 3: PAN Verification
- Select the type of organization: Proprietorship, Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), Partnership, LLP, Private Limited, Society, Trust, or Co-operative.
- Enter the PAN of your organization. For sole proprietorships, enter your personal PAN.
- Click on Validate PAN.
- The system will automatically fetch your Income Tax Return (ITR) data and GSTIN details from the government database. This is how the portal verifies your investment and turnover figures.
Step 4: Fill the enterprise details
Once PAN is validated, fill in the rest of the application form:
- Plant/Unit Location: Enter the complete address of your business facility (factory, office, workshop, etc.).
- Official Communication Address: Enter the address where you want to receive official correspondence.
- Date of Incorporation/Commencement: Specify when your business started operations. For sole proprietors, this is the date you started doing business.
- Bank Account Details: Provide your business bank account number and IFSC code.
- NIC Code: Select the National Industrial Classification (NIC) code that best matches your business activity. The portal provides a searchable list. Examples: "Retail sale of food, beverages" for a grocery shop, "Computer programming" for a software freelancer.
- Number of Employees: Enter the total number of people employed in your enterprise.
Step 5: Verify investment and turnover data
Since the portal is integrated with the Income Tax and GST systems, your investment and turnover details are usually auto-populated from your latest ITR and GST returns. Review these figures carefully.
If prompted to enter the data manually (common for very new businesses that have not yet filed ITR), enter your best estimates. The portal will automatically reclassify your enterprise in subsequent years based on your actual filings.
Step 6: Submit and get the certificate
- Read and accept the declaration at the end of the form.
- Click on Submit and Get Final OTP.
- Enter the final OTP and the CAPTCHA code.
- Click Submit.
You will receive your Udyam Registration Number (URN) immediately on screen. This URN is your permanent MSME identifier. After a standard processing time of 2 to 5 working days, your final Udyam Registration Certificate (a PDF with a QR code) will be emailed to you. You can also download it from the portal at any time.
After Registration: What to Do with Your Certificate
- Share it with your bank when applying for loans to get MSME priority lending rates.
- Upload it on GeM (Government e-Marketplace) if you want to participate in government procurement.
- Quote your URN number on invoices to avail the delayed payment protection under Section 15 of the MSMED Act.
- Use it when filing trademarks to get the 50% fee discount.
Common Mistakes
- Using a third-party paid website: Many people Google "MSME registration" and land on paid sites that look official. Always check that the URL is
udyamregistration.gov.in. - Entering the wrong NIC code: Choosing the wrong business activity code can cause issues later, especially when applying for sector-specific government schemes. Take time to find the most accurate code.
- Not migrating from Udyog Aadhaar: If you had the old Udyog Aadhaar, it is no longer valid for most government schemes. You must re-register on the Udyam portal.
- Underreporting turnover: The portal cross-checks your turnover against your GST and ITR data. Deliberately underreporting to stay in a lower category is detectable and can lead to registration cancellation.
Troubleshooting
The portal says "Aadhaar validation failed": Check that your name matches your Aadhaar exactly. Also ensure the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar is active and receiving SMS. If your Aadhaar mobile number has changed, update it at an Aadhaar enrollment center first.
PAN validation fails or shows "PAN not found": Ensure you are entering the correct PAN (organization PAN vs. personal PAN). For sole proprietors, use your personal PAN. For partnerships or companies, use the entity's PAN. If the PAN was recently issued, it may take 2-3 weeks to propagate to the Udyam portal's database.
I submitted but never received the certificate email: Check your spam folder. The email comes from a government domain that email providers sometimes flag. You can also log back into the Udyam portal using your Aadhaar and download the certificate directly from the dashboard.
I need to update my details after registration (changed address, new employee count, etc.): Log in to the Udyam portal using your URN and Aadhaar. Click on "Update Udyam Registration" to modify any details. Updates are free and take effect within 2-3 working days.
