Airport Customs Checklist for India

Indian airport customs checklist for arrivals and departures. Green/red channel, declarations, gold, and electronics tips.

By HowDoI India TeamLast updated: 30 August 2026Reviewed: 21 September 2026

Indian airport customs is mostly about honesty and paperwork, not tricks. Whether you are an Indian resident returning home or a visitor, a short checklist before you land (or leave) saves arguments at the belt. Rules and free allowance values change by notification, so treat numbers on older blogs carefully and confirm against CBIC when you carry high-value goods.

Arrival checklist (before you pick green or red)

  1. Mentally list jewellery, watches, electronics, liquor, and cash you are carrying.
  2. Separate personal used items from brand-new sealed goods with bills.
  3. Keep invoices for expensive purchases in your hand baggage.
  4. Know whether you are arriving after more than a few days abroad (allowances can differ for shorter visits).
  5. Complete any DigiYatra / immigration steps first; customs is after baggage claim in most terminals.

IMPORTANT

Walking through green channel means you are declaring you are within free allowance. If that is not true, choose red channel.

Green vs red channel

ChannelChoose when
GreenOnly personal effects within free allowance, nothing restricted
RedGoods to declare, dutiable items, commercial quantity, or unsure

Officers may X-ray or open bags in either channel. Cooperate; arguing rarely helps.

High-attention items

  • Gold and jewellery: Free allowance rules differ for men / women and for short trips. Read our gold allowance guide before you fly with family jewellery or new bars.
  • Liquor and tobacco: Subject to quantity caps and duty beyond allowance.
  • Electronics: One personal laptop is normal; five identical sealed phones is not.
  • Cash / foreign exchange: Declare when you cross notified thresholds.
  • Food, plants, animal products: Many are restricted. Check before packing homemade foods.

Departure tips

  1. Keep jewellery you wore on the outbound flight consistent with what you wear on return if you rely on personal effects arguments.
  2. For high-value goods bought in India for export, ask about export certificate processes when relevant.
  3. Batteries and power banks must follow airline safety rules in cabin baggage.

TIP

Photograph jewellery you travel with and keep old purchase bills at home. That trail helps if customs questions origin on return.

If duty is demanded

  1. Ask for the calculation basis and section.
  2. Pay through the official challan process at the airport.
  3. Keep receipts with your passport copy.
  4. Use our Customs Duty Calculator only as an estimate before travel, not as a substitute for the officer's assessment.

Family travel and split baggage

Customs looks at what the passenger carrying the bag is moving, but families sometimes split new phones or jewellery across bags. That pattern is obvious and attracts questions. If you are carrying gifts above allowance, consolidate declarations at red channel instead of hoping separate green-channel walks will hide the total.

Medicines and currency

Prescription medicines should stay in original strips with a doctor's note for anything unusual. Large amounts of Indian or foreign currency need declaration above notified limits. Saying you "did not know" rarely helps once the scanner has flagged the envelope.

Before you board (quick pack)

  1. Photograph jewellery and gadgets you travel with; keep purchase bills in hand baggage.
  2. Count identical sealed electronics. Several new phones looks commercial.
  3. Read the current gold and currency rules if you are carrying either in volume (see related guides).
  4. Estimate possible duty with our Customs Duty Calculator before you fly, then confirm against CBIC if values are high.
  5. Decide green vs red channel before you reach the belt, not while an officer is waiting.

Indian residents returning after a short trip sometimes face tighter free-allowance rules than longer stays. If you bought jewellery or gadgets abroad for gifts, keep invoices ready and prefer red channel when the total looks close to the limit. Visitors to India should also keep OCI or visa pages handy if the officer asks about residency status.

After you clear customs

Keep duty challans and baggage tags with your passport copy for a few weeks. If jewellery or gadgets are questioned on a later trip, those papers help show what you already declared. For family jewellery worn both ways, keep photos from the outbound flight so the story stays consistent on return.

When should I use the red channel?

Do I need a customs form every time?
Follow the current instruction on your flight and airport screens. When in doubt for high-value goods, declare at red channel rather than risk seizure.
