How to Apply for an OCI Card from India

Apply for Overseas Citizen of India registration from India. Eligibility, VFS steps, documents, and OCI vs visa tips.

By HowDoI India TeamLast updated: 30 August 2026

An Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card lets eligible people of Indian origin travel to India without repeatedly applying for long-term visas, subject to OCI rules. If you are currently in India on a valid visa or other status and meet eligibility, you can start the registration online and complete biometrics / document submission at the designated centre.

Confirm eligibility first

Typical qualifying links include:

  • You held an Indian passport earlier, or
  • Your parents / grandparents were Indian citizens, or
  • You are a minor child of parents who qualify

Exclusions apply (including for certain nationalities notified by MEA). Read the latest instructions on the OCI Services portal before paying.

IMPORTANT

OCI is not citizenship. You cannot vote in Indian elections or hold certain constitutional posts with OCI status.

Documents checklist

Exact lists differ for each family situation. Use the portal document list for your category.

Step 1: Fill the OCI registration online

  1. Register on ociservices.gov.in.
  2. Choose new OCI registration (not miscellaneous services unless you already hold OCI).
  3. Fill personal particulars matching the foreign passport.
  4. Upload photo, signature, and supporting PDFs within size limits.
  5. Submit and print the application with barcodes / acknowledgment.

Step 2: Pay fees and book submission

  1. Pay fees as directed for applications filed in India.
  2. Book an appointment at the VFS / designated Indian submission centre if that is the current channel in your city.
  3. Carry originals for verification plus printed form sets.

Step 3: Biometrics and verification

  1. Give biometrics at the centre.
  2. Respond quickly if the mission / MEA raises a query online.
  3. Police verification may occur based on your Indian address.

TIP

Keep old cancelled Indian passports safe. They are often the cleanest proof of prior Indian citizenship.

Step 4: Collect OCI and travel rules

  1. When status shows ready, collect or receive the OCI card as instructed.
  2. Always travel with the foreign passport plus OCI card.
  3. For certain long absences or passport renewals, complete OCI miscellaneous services (new passport number linking) on time.

Spouse OCI cases

Spouse-based OCI has extra marriage proof and, in some situations, a waiting period or specific eligibility reading. Do not upload only a wedding photo album. Registered marriage certificates and passports of both spouses matter. If the marriage was registered abroad, check whether an Indian apostille / embassy attestation path is needed for your centre.

After OCI is issued

When you renew the foreign passport, file OCI miscellaneous services to link the new passport number. Travelling on a new passport with an OCI still tied to an old passport number creates airline check-in issues.

Fees, photos, and upload rejections

OCI photo specifications are strict: plain background, correct size, recent capture. Blurry smartphone crops are the top reason centres send applicants home. Resize using the portal's published pixel guidelines before you book the appointment.

Fee amounts differ for adults and minors and can change. Pay only through the official payment link tied to your acknowledgment. Keep the payment receipt with the application printout. If a query is raised online, reply inside the portal with clearer scans rather than creating a brand-new application unless MEA instructs you to reapply.

Realistic timelines

Most people lose time waiting on OTP issues, unclear scans, or a portal outage rather than on the core form itself. Build a small buffer into your plans. If a visa, loan, or registration appointment depends on this document, start at least one or two weeks earlier than the brochure minimum.

Keep a folder (phone and laptop) with:

  1. Application / acknowledgment PDF
  2. Fee receipt or UTR
  3. Identity proofs used in the upload
  4. Screenshots of status pages with dates visible

When a helpdesk asks for proof, you should be able to send it in one email without hunting through WhatsApp.

If the portal is down

Official sites in India often slow down on weekday evenings and near due dates. Try early morning, switch browsers, or use a less congested network. Prefer the gov.in domain even when a third-party site claims to be faster. If money was debited without an acknowledgment, wait for the stated reconciliation window and contact the listed support channel with the bank reference before you pay again.

After you finish

Update every dependent record that still shows old data: DigiLocker, employer HRMS, bank KYC, insurer, and any travel profile. A finished application that never propagates to the places you actually use will feel unfinished the next time you need it in a hurry.
