Tatkal tickets are last-minute train tickets available on IRCTC one day before the train departs. They carry an additional surcharge and sell out within seconds for popular routes like Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Kolkata, Bangalore-Chennai, and any route during festivals or holidays.
Getting a confirmed Tatkal ticket is part skill, part preparation, and part luck. This guide gives you every possible advantage.
Tatkal Booking Window: Know the Exact Times
| Detail | AC Classes (1A, 2A, 3A, CC, EC) | Non-AC Classes (SL, 2S) |
|---|---|---|
| Booking opens | 10:00 AM sharp, one day before departure | 11:00 AM sharp, one day before departure |
| Max tickets per user per day | 2 | 2 |
| Max passengers per ticket | 4 | 4 |
| Cancellation (confirmed) | Not allowed | Not allowed |
IMPORTANT
"One day before departure" means the day before the train's scheduled departure date, not one day before the journey start time. For a train departing on Friday, Tatkal opens on Thursday at 10:00 AM for AC and 11:00 AM for SL.
Before You Book: Preparation Checklist
The difference between getting a Tatkal ticket and missing it comes down to preparation. Everything should be ready before the clock hits 10:00 AM.

How to Pre-Save Passenger Details (Critical Time Saver)
- Log in to IRCTC.
- Go to My Account > My Profile > Add Master List.
- Add each passenger's full name, age, gender, berth preference, and ID proof number.
- During Tatkal booking, you can select passengers from this list in one click instead of typing everything manually.
This single step can save you 30-60 seconds during booking, which is often the difference between getting a confirmed ticket and ending up on the waitlist.
Step 1: Log in Early
- Open irctc.co.in at least 10 minutes before the Tatkal window opens.
- Log in with your IRCTC user ID and password.
- Complete the CAPTCHA.
- Keep the browser tab open. Do not close or refresh until you are ready to search.
TIP
Use a desktop or laptop with a wired internet connection (Ethernet, not Wi-Fi) for the fastest response time. The IRCTC website handles desktop browsers better than mobile during peak load. If using the IRCTC Rail Connect app, ensure it is updated to the latest version.
Step 2: Search at Exactly the Right Second
- Watch a clock synced to Indian Standard Time (use time.is/IST for precision).
- At exactly 10:00:00 AM (for AC) or 11:00:00 AM (for non-AC), click Find Trains or Search.
- Enter the From Station, To Station, and Journey Date (tomorrow's date).
- Select Tatkal as the quota (not General).
- Click Search.
The system will show available Tatkal seats for trains departing on the selected date.
Step 3: Select Train and Class
- Click Book Now next to the desired class showing Available or Available-XXX status.
- If it shows WL (waitlist), your chances depend on the number:
| Waitlist Number | Chance of Confirmation |
|---|---|
| WL 1-5 | High (most routes confirm these) |
| WL 6-15 | Medium (depends on cancellations) |
| WL 16+ | Low (unlikely to confirm) |
Step 4: Add Passengers and Pay
- Add passengers from your saved master list (this saves critical seconds).
- Verify the ID proof type and number for each passenger. This is mandatory for all Tatkal bookings. The same ID must be carried during travel.
- Select your preferred berth (lower, middle, upper, side lower, side upper). Note: this is a preference, not a guarantee. During Tatkal, you get whatever is available.
- Select your payment method.
WARNING
Speed is everything. You have approximately 10 minutes to complete the booking after clicking "Book Now." If you take too long, the session expires and your seat is released to another user. Do not spend time deliberating. Have everything decided in advance.
- Pay using the fastest method available:
| Payment Method | Speed | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| IRCTC iPaywallet | Fastest | Pre-load money before Tatkal time for instant payment. No OTP needed. |
| UPI (BHIM, Google Pay, PhonePe) | Fast | Keep the UPI app open on your phone. Approve the request within seconds. |
| Net Banking | Medium | OTP wait can cost 10-30 seconds. Keep the bank tab open. |
| Debit/Credit Card | Slow | OTP + 3D Secure adds extra steps. Avoid for Tatkal. |
- After payment confirmation, download your e-ticket. Carry a printout or keep it on your phone for the journey.
Tatkal Fare Structure
Tatkal charges are flat premiums added on top of the regular base fare (not a percentage):
| Class | Minimum Tatkal Charge | Maximum Tatkal Charge |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeper (SL) | Rs 100 | Rs 200 |
| 3rd AC (3A) | Rs 300 | Rs 400 |
| 2nd AC (2A) | Rs 400 | Rs 500 |
| 1st AC (1A) | Rs 400 | Rs 500 |
| Chair Car (CC) | Rs 100 | Rs 150 |
| Executive Chair (EC) | Rs 400 | Rs 500 |
The exact charge depends on the distance travelled. Longer routes attract higher charges within the min-max range.
Regular Tatkal vs Premium Tatkal
| Feature | Regular Tatkal | Premium Tatkal (PQWL) |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | Fixed surcharge on base fare | Dynamic pricing (fare increases with demand) |
| Cancellation | Not allowed for confirmed tickets | Not allowed at all, even for waitlisted |
| Fare range | Predictable | Can be 2x-5x of base fare on busy routes |
| When to use | Default choice | Only if regular Tatkal is sold out |
WARNING
Premium Tatkal fares on popular routes (Delhi-Mumbai Rajdhani, for example) can become absurdly expensive. A 3AC ticket that normally costs Rs 2,000 can surge to Rs 8,000+ under Premium Tatkal. And you cannot cancel even if waitlisted. Use with extreme caution.
Cancellation Rules
| Ticket Status | Cancellation? | Refund |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed | Not allowed | No refund under any circumstances |
| RAC | Allowed before chart preparation | Refund minus clerkage charges (Rs 60) |
| Waitlisted | Allowed before chart preparation | Refund minus clerkage charges |
| Train cancelled by railways | Automatic | Full refund credited automatically |
| Premium Tatkal (any status) | Not allowed | No refund |
Pro Tips for Successful Tatkal Booking
- Pre-fill everything: Save passengers in the master list. Do not type names manually during Tatkal.
- Know your train number: Have the exact train number memorized. Do not browse trains at 10 AM.
- Use the fastest payment method: Pre-load IRCTC iPaywallet or keep UPI ready.
- Avoid peak routes on peak days: Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Kolkata, and Bangalore-Hyderabad sell out in 10-20 seconds during weekends and holidays. Consider alternative trains on the same route or departures from nearby stations.
- Try the app if the website is overloaded. Sometimes the IRCTC Rail Connect app has a slightly better success rate than the website during peak load, or vice versa.
- Do not refresh the page while the booking or payment is processing. Wait patiently.
- Have a backup train: If your first-choice train is sold out, immediately try a second or third option.
Common Problems
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| "No Tatkal quota available" | Not all trains have Tatkal quota for all classes. Check if Tatkal is available for your specific train and class before booking day. |
| Booking failed after payment was deducted | Check your email for a ticket. If no ticket was received, the deducted amount is usually auto-refunded within 2-5 working days. Check IRCTC > My Account > Booked Tickets. |
| Session expired during booking | You took too long. The 10-minute session timer is strict. Log in again and try immediately if seats are still available. |
| CAPTCHA keeps failing | Clear browser cache, try a different browser, or switch to the mobile app. |
| "Service unavailable" error at 10:00 AM | Server overload. Millions of users hit the server simultaneously. Keep trying. The window stays open all day; seats may become available as waitlisted tickets get cancelled. |
