You need an IRCTC Rail Connect account to book reserved train tickets online, including Tatkal. Registration takes a few minutes on the official site or app when OTP works. This guide covers a clean signup, password hygiene, and the KYC step that raises booking limits later.

Before you start

  1. Keep a mobile number you control for OTP (prefer the one linked to Aadhaar if you plan KYC soon).
  2. Keep an email you check daily for tickets and refunds.
  3. Decide a unique user ID you will remember; changing it later is not casual.
  4. Use irctc.co.in or the official Rail Connect app only.

IMPORTANT

Never share your IRCTC password or OTP with agents who promise Tatkal "guarantees." Confirmed tickets are issued to the account that pays.

Step 1: Open registration

  1. Go to IRCTC and choose Register / Create an account.
  2. On the app, open the signup flow from the login screen.
  3. Select Indian resident options unless you truly need the foreigner path.

Step 2: Choose user ID and password

  1. Enter a user ID that meets the on-screen rules (usually a mix of letters and numbers within a fixed length).
  2. Set a strong password you do not reuse from email or banking.
  3. Confirm password carefully; mistyped passwords cause lockouts on first login attempts.

If the ID is taken, change it rather than arguing with support. Popular names go fast.

Step 3: Enter personal and contact details

  1. Fill name as you want it on tickets (close to ID proof spelling).
  2. Enter date of birth, gender, and security question answers you will remember.
  3. Add mobile and email; complete both OTPs when asked.
  4. Accept terms and submit.

Save the success message. You should be able to log in immediately afterward.

Step 4: First login and profile cleanup

  1. Log in and open My Account / profile.
  2. Add a master passenger list for people you book often (names, ages, ID types).
  3. Add a preferred payment method you trust (UPI is usually fastest for Tatkal).
  4. Note the registered mobile; ticket OTPs and password resets use it.

Step 5: Optional Aadhaar KYC for higher limits

IRCTC may limit how many tickets a new or unverified account can book. Completing Aadhaar authentication inside IRCTC raises those limits for many users. See How to Raise IRCTC Ticket Limit with Aadhaar when you hit the cap.

Common registration problems

  • OTP not received: wait for the cooldown, check DND, try SMS again, or retry off peak hours
  • Email already registered: recover that account instead of creating a duplicate person profile
  • Account locked after wrong passwords: use forgot password and wait out the lock window
  • App version outdated: update Rail Connect from the official store listing

Security habits that prevent later pain

Turn off password saving on shared cafe computers. Do not store IRCTC OTP screenshots in public chats. If you change your Aadhaar mobile later, update IRCTC profile contacts the same week so refunds and password resets still reach you.

Enable only the devices you control. When a phone is lost, change the IRCTC password and review recent bookings for anything you did not place.

After registration

You can book general quota tickets anytime the chart allows, and Tatkal in the morning window. Learn the Tatkal timing guide before festival travel: How to Book Tatkal Tickets on IRCTC. For status after booking, use How to Check IRCTC PNR Status.

Add ID proof numbers for frequent passengers in the master list so Tatkal mornings are not spent typing Aadhaar digits under pressure. Test one small non-Tatkal booking first if you are new to UPI on IRCTC, so payment failures are not a surprise at 10:00 AM.

When the site is overloaded

Registration forms time out near Tatkal hours and festival releases. Try late evening or early morning. Prefer a laptop browser if the app stuck mid-OTP. Do not pay a shop to "create VIP IDs"; there is no official VIP registration lane for the public form.

If signup succeeds but login fails with a blank error, clear site cookies for irctc.co.in, try another browser, or wait through a short lockout after repeated password mistakes.

Forgot password and email mismatch

Use the official forgot-password flow with the registered mobile or email. If you no longer control that mobile, fix the number through IRCTC profile recovery options before festival booking week. Creating a second account because reset failed often hits KYC and ticket-limit confusion later.

Write down the user ID in a password manager, not in a WhatsApp chat titled "train." Friends forwarding the chat is how accounts get hijacked before Tatkal opens.

Family bookings without sharing the password

Add family members to the master list and book from one adult's account when possible. If parents need their own history for office claims, help them register separately rather than handing over your OTP forever.

Frequently asked questions

Is IRCTC registration free?
Creating a user account on the official IRCTC site or app is free. Beware of agents who charge only to fill the same form.
Do I need Aadhaar to register?
You can create an account with email and mobile OTP. Aadhaar KYC later raises ticket booking limits and unlocks some flows.
Why is my user ID rejected?
User IDs must follow IRCTC rules (length, allowed characters, uniqueness). Try a different ID if the name is taken.
Can one family share one account?
You can book for family members on one account within passenger limits, but sharing passwords across many phones risks lockouts and OTP confusion.
