How to Register a New Vehicle Online

Register a new car or two-wheeler through dealer Vahan flow. Temporary number, documents, road tax, and RC download steps.

By HowDoI India TeamLast updated: 30 August 2026

Buying a new car or bike in India almost always means the dealer starts registration on Vahan for you. You still need to give the right documents, pay road tax correctly, and confirm that the RC finally shows your name. Use this checklist so nothing is left pending after delivery.

What registration includes

  • Temporary registration (TR) for delivery
  • Permanent registration number allotment
  • Road tax payment to the state
  • Hypothecation entry if you took a loan
  • High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) and FASTag where mandated
  • e-RC in DigiLocker

IMPORTANT

Do not accept delivery without a temporary registration document and insurance. Driving an unregistered vehicle can attract fines and complicate claims.

Step 1: Confirm RTO and tax

  1. Registration usually happens at the RTO linked to your address PIN code.
  2. Ask the dealer for a written break-up: ex-showroom, insurance, RTO tax, handling, HSRP, and any "choice number" fee.
  3. Road tax is state-specific and often based on invoice value and fuel type. Verify the amount on the state transport site if the figure looks odd.

Step 2: Dealer files on Vahan

Most showrooms:

  1. Upload Form 20 and manufacturer sale certificate
  2. Enter chassis and engine numbers
  3. Attach your KYC
  4. Mark hypothecation to the financier if applicable
  5. Pay registration fee and road tax online

You should receive an acknowledgement / TR copy by email or WhatsApp. Save it.

Step 3: Temporary number and delivery

  1. Drive out on the temporary number within its validity.
  2. Keep insurance, PUC (if issued), and TR papers in the vehicle.
  3. HSRP fitting may happen at delivery or at an authorised centre later. Follow the SMS booking link if your state uses one.

Step 4: Permanent number and e-RC

  1. Track application status on Vahan using the registration / application number the dealer shared.
  2. When permanent number is allotted, update insurance and FASTag with the final plate.
  3. Pull the RC into DigiLocker. Confirm name spelling, fuel type, and hypothecation line.

TIP

If DigiLocker still shows TR details after two weeks, ask the dealer for the Vahan application number and raise a ticket with the RTO helpdesk.

Step 5: After registration checklist

  • Update local parking / society records with the permanent number
  • Store chassis number and RC PDF in a safe cloud folder
  • If financed, note the bank name on RC for later hypothecation removal
  • Book first service with the permanent registration on file so warranty records match

Common issues

  • Tax paid but number not allotted: RTO backlog. Dealer follows up with application printout.
  • Wrong address on RC: Apply for correction through Vahan services quickly before other KYC uses the wrong data.
  • HPA missing on financed cars: Get the dealer to amend before the first EMI cycle ends.
  • Buyer moved cities after booking: Registration address must match rules for that RTO. Discuss before invoice is cut.

Realistic timelines

Most people lose time waiting on OTP issues, unclear scans, or a portal outage rather than on the core form itself. Build a small buffer into your plans. If a visa, loan, or registration appointment depends on this document, start at least one or two weeks earlier than the brochure minimum.

Keep a folder (phone and laptop) with:

  1. Application / acknowledgment PDF
  2. Fee receipt or UTR
  3. Identity proofs used in the upload
  4. Screenshots of status pages with dates visible

When a helpdesk asks for proof, you should be able to send it in one email without hunting through WhatsApp.

If the portal is down

Official sites in India often slow down on weekday evenings and near due dates. Try early morning, switch browsers, or use a less congested network. Prefer the gov.in domain even when a third-party site claims to be faster. If money was debited without an acknowledgment, wait for the stated reconciliation window and contact the listed support channel with the bank reference before you pay again.

After you finish

Update every dependent record that still shows old data: DigiLocker, employer HRMS, bank KYC, insurer, and any travel profile. A finished application that never propagates to the places you actually use will feel unfinished the next time you need it in a hurry.

Frequently asked questions

Does the buyer visit the RTO for a new vehicle?
Often no. Dealers handle Vahan entry, tax payment, and HSRP. You may still need to visit for biometrics or inspection in some states or for certain vehicle types.
What is a temporary registration number?
Dealers issue a temporary number so you can drive home legally until permanent registration is allotted. Validity is limited. Do not ignore permanent RC follow-up.
When do I get the permanent RC?
After road tax and registration fees clear and the number is allotted, e-RC appears on Vahan / DigiLocker. Physical card follows by post in many states.
Can I choose a fancy registration number?
Some RTOs run online auctions or choice-number schemes for an extra fee. Ask the dealer what your RTO currently offers.
