After you apply for a new ration card, or when your existing card suddenly stops working at the Fair Price Shop, the first job is to read the official status, not a third-party screenshot. Status lives on your state's food and civil supplies / ePDS site. This guide shows how to look it up, what the common labels mean, and what to do when the page is stuck.
What you need before you search
- Application or acknowledgment number from the submission SMS or PDF.
- Aadhaar number of the head of family (for portals that offer Aadhaar search).
- Registered mobile number for OTP if the portal forces login.
- Rough date of application so you can tell old records from new ones.
IMPORTANT
Status on a private "ration card check" website is not official. Use your state gov.in portal only.
Step 1: Open the correct state portal
- Start from nfsa.gov.in state links if you are unsure of the URL.
- Open Citizen services, Know your ration card, Track application, or similar.
- Bookmark the HTTPS
gov.inpage so you do not land on ads next time.
Step 2: Search with reference or Aadhaar
- Choose Track application for a new form still under process.
- Choose View ration card / Know your FPS for an existing card.
- Enter the acknowledgment ID, or Aadhaar, or ration card number as the form allows.
- Complete CAPTCHA and OTP when asked.
Save a screenshot of the result page with the date visible. Helpdesks ask for that often.
Step 3: Read the status label carefully
Typical labels (wording varies by state):
- Submitted / received: form is in the queue
- Pending verification / field visit: someone must confirm residence
- Approved / sanctioned: card should generate soon
- Card printed / e-card available: download PDF or collect physical card
- Rejected: open the reason code; fix documents and reapply if allowed
- Inactive / cancelled: do not ignore; fix before the next grain month
Step 4: Act on stuck or rejected statuses
- If pending verification for weeks, visit the circle / district food office with acknowledgment printout and address proof.
- If rejected for document quality, re-upload clearer scans; do not open a duplicate with different names.
- If inactive after a move, complete surrender or ONORC mapping before blaming the dealer.
- If FPS code looks wrong, ask the office to remap you; buying grain at the wrong shop often fails at the POS.
Existing card: monthly entitlement checks
Some portals show whether the current month's grain is lifted. If the dealer says stock is over but the portal still shows balance, note the date and raise a grievance on the same citizen portal. Carry Aadhaar to the shop; many states need biometric or OTP at the electronic Point of Sale.
Mobile apps and DigiLocker
A few states publish Android apps that mirror web status. DigiLocker may store an issued e-ration card after approval, but it will not show a mid-verification application. Prefer the food department site for live tracking.
Dealer says one thing, portal says another
If the Fair Price Shop claims your card is blocked but the state portal shows active, trust the portal printout and visit the circle office with both stories. Dealers sometimes confuse ONORC failures with cancelled cards. Bring Aadhaar, the e-card PDF, and a screenshot of status from the same morning.
If the portal shows inactive and the dealer is right, do not argue at the shop queue. Fix seeding or surrender issues on the home portal first, then return in the next entitlement cycle.
When the portal is slow
Try early morning, another browser, or mobile data if broadband is congested. Do not pay someone who claims a "back office refresh." If money was never part of the process, there is nothing to reconcile except your patience and a physical visit.
After you confirm status
If approved, download the e-card and confirm FPS details. If still applying, keep following the apply guide rather than opening a second file. For interstate travel with an active card, use the ONORC walkthrough. Scheme overview: ration schemes hub and NFSA listing.
Paper trail worth keeping
Store the application acknowledgment, rejection letter if any, e-card PDF, and last successful lift SMS. When you change mobile number on Aadhaar, update the ration portal login the same week so OTP tracking does not break. Name the files with the month so you can find last year's rejection reason if you reapply.
