How to Apply for a Ration Card Online

Apply for a new ration card online under NFSA. State portals, documents, eKYC, and what to do after submission.

A ration card under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) lets eligible households buy subsidised grain from Fair Price Shops. New cards are issued by your state food and civil supplies department, not by a single national website. This walkthrough covers what to prepare, how a typical online application works, and how to avoid the rejections that waste weeks.

Before you apply

  1. Confirm you do not already hold an active ration card in another state.
  2. Decide who is the head of family on the form (usually the adult who will collect grain).
  3. Match names and dates of birth on Aadhaar for every member you list.
  4. Keep a soft copy of address proof that matches where you actually live now.

IMPORTANT

Dual cards get cancelled when databases sync. If you moved states, finish surrender or ONORC transfer before you open a fresh application.

Step 1: Open your state food portal

  1. Search for your state's food and civil supplies or ePDS / ration card portal from a trusted list (start from nfsa.gov.in state links when unsure).
  2. Prefer domains ending in gov.in. Avoid agents who ask you to pay for the same free form.
  3. Look for New ration card, Apply online, or Citizen services.

Official national overview: nfsa.gov.in.

Step 2: Register and start the form

  1. Create a citizen login with mobile OTP if the state requires it.
  2. Choose card type when asked (Priority Household / Antyodaya / state category names vary).
  3. Enter head of family details exactly as on Aadhaar.
  4. Add members one by one with relationship, age, and Aadhaar.

TIP

If OTP fails, fix the Aadhaar mobile number first, then retry. Paying a cyber cafe to "bypass OTP" usually creates a fake acknowledgment that never reaches the district office.

Step 3: Upload proofs and complete eKYC

  1. Upload address proof and photos in the size and format the portal lists (often JPG under a small MB limit).
  2. Complete Aadhaar eKYC for the head of family and members when prompted.
  3. Submit and download or screenshot the acknowledgment / reference number.

Without that number, tracking later is painful.

Step 4: Field verification and card issue

  1. A local inspector or FPS dealer may visit or call to confirm residence and family count.
  2. Keep someone at the address during working hours for a few weeks after submission.
  3. When approved, download the e-ration card PDF or collect the physical card as your state issues it.
  4. Confirm your Fair Price Shop code on the card before the first purchase month.

Common rejection reasons

  • Address on the form does not match the uploaded bill or Aadhaar
  • Member already seeded on another family's active card
  • Photo too dark or cropped so the face fails quality checks
  • Head of family name spelling differs across Aadhaar and bank records
  • Old out-of-state card never surrendered

If you rent or recently moved

Landlords sometimes refuse to sign rent agreements for ration purposes. Use whatever address proof your state explicitly allows (employer letter, municipal certificate, relative's consent with their card details). List only people who actually live with you. Adding cousins to inflate units risks cancellation after verification.

After approval

Save the PDF offline and note the FPS name and code. When you travel for work, read the ONORC guide so you can lift grain outside your home state if your card is mapped. For scheme context and related benefits, open the ration schemes hub and the NFSA ration benefits listing.

Mistakes that waste a month

Do not submit two applications with different head-of-family names for the same household. Officers treat that as fraud risk and freeze both files. Do not list a relative who already draws grain on another card. Do not use a friend's address to "get a card faster" if you do not live there; verification visits catch this often.

If the portal asks for income or category details, answer honestly. Priority Household and Antyodaya quotas are limited. A false category can get you a temporary card that is cancelled after audit, which is worse than waiting for the correct category.

Dealer and CSC tips

Fair Price Shop dealers and Common Service Centres can help with scans and eKYC, but the application should still show your mobile number and your acknowledgment. Ask for a printed receipt with the reference ID before you leave. If someone says only cash will "speed up" approval, walk out and use the district office grievance desk instead.

Realistic timelines

Portals are fast. Field verification is not. Build in two to six weeks depending on district load. Festival months and migration seasons slow inspections. If status sits on "pending verification" for more than a month, visit the district food office with your acknowledgment printout rather than filing a second online form.

Keep a small folder (phone and paper) with the acknowledgment, Aadhaar copies used in the form, address proof upload, and any SMS from the food department. When an officer asks for proof, you should be able to show it the same day.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one national portal for a new ration card?
No. States and UTs run their own food and civil supplies portals. You apply on your state's site, not on a single all-India form.
Do I need Aadhaar to apply?
Almost every state asks for Aadhaar of the head of family and members for eKYC. Keep mobile numbers linked to Aadhaar ready for OTP.
How long does approval take?
Many states quote a few weeks after field verification. Delays are common when address proof or family details do not match Aadhaar.
Can I apply if I already have a card in another state?
You usually must surrender or transfer the old card first. Dual active cards are not allowed under NFSA rules.
