Before you can invest a single rupee in mutual funds in India, completing your "Know Your Customer" (KYC) process is a strict legal requirement mandated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
In the past, this meant filling out a 4-page paper form and submitting physical photocopies to an office. Today, thanks to Aadhaar and digital platforms, you can complete your mutual fund KYC entirely online from your home in about 10 minutes.
Here is a complete walkthrough on how to do it using a KYC Registration Agency (KRA).
Understanding the KRA System
India uses a centralized KYC system. There are a few authorized KRAs (CAMS, KFintech, CVL, NDML). You only need to complete KYC with one of them. Once approved, your data is shared centrally. If you do your KYC on the CAMS portal, you can perfectly well invest in a mutual fund managed by an AMC that uses KFintech.
What You Need Before You Start
Gather these items before starting the process, as the session may time out if you take too long looking for them:
Prerequisites for Video e-KYC

Step 1: Visit an official KRA portal
You can use the portal of any SEBI-registered KRA. The two most user-friendly ones for retail investors are:
Navigate to the "New KYC", "e-KYC", or "Aadhaar based KYC" section on their homepage.
Step 2: Verify your PAN status
- Enter your Email ID and Mobile Number.
- Enter your PAN number.
- The system will check the central database. If it says "KYC Validated", stop here. You are already good to go. If it says "Not KYC Compliant", proceed to the next step.
Step 3: Fetch Aadhaar details via DigiLocker
The portal will redirect you to DigiLocker or the UIDAI page for Aadhaar authentication. This step fetches your verified name, address, and photo directly from government servers, saving you from manually uploading address proofs.
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number.
- Enter the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
- Grant permission for DigiLocker to share your Aadhaar details with the KRA.
- The system will display your fetched address and photo. Confirm that these are correct.
WARNING
If the address on your Aadhaar is outdated, do not proceed. The address fetched from Aadhaar will become your permanent communication address for all mutual fund investments. Update your address on the UIDAI portal first, wait for it to process, and then apply for mutual fund KYC.
Step 4: Provide additional information
SEBI requires mutual funds to collect supplementary information about your financial profile. Fill out the online form with:
- Family details: Your father's name, mother's name, or spouse's name.
- Marital status: Single or married.
- Occupation type: Salaried, self-employed, business, student, or retired.
- Gross annual income: Select the bracket that applies to you (e.g., ₹1-5 Lakhs, ₹5-10 Lakhs).
- Politically Exposed Person (PEP) status: Select 'No' unless you are a senior politician or closely related to one.
Step 5: Upload your signature
You cannot use a digital font signature. You must provide a physical signature scan.
- Take the blank piece of white paper and sign it exactly as you sign bank cheques.
- Take a clear photo of the signature using your phone. Ensure there are no shadows over the ink.
- Crop the photo so only the signature is visible, and upload it to the portal.
Step 6: Complete Video In-Person Verification (IPV)
To remove the ₹50,000 investment limit, you must complete the IPV step. This proves you are a real, living person applying for the account.
- The website will ask for permission to access your camera and microphone. Click Allow.
- Position your face clearly in the camera frame.
- The screen will display a randomly generated OTP or a short sentence.
- Click the record button. Look at the camera and read the OTP or sentence out loud, clearly and audibly.
- The recording usually lasts 5 to 10 seconds. Click submit.
Step 7: e-Sign the application
Review your completed application form on the screen. Check the spelling of your name and your address.
To finalize the submission, you must legally sign the digital form.
- Click on the e-Sign with Aadhaar button.
- You will be taken to the NSDL electronic signature page.
- Enter your Aadhaar number and click "Get OTP".
- Enter the OTP to digitally sign the application.
Your KYC application is now submitted.
What Happens Next: The CKYC Number (KIN)
The KRA team will manually review your video IPV and signature. This backend verification usually takes 2 to 5 working days.
Once approved, you will receive an email containing a 14-digit KYC Identification Number (KIN). This is your Central KYC (CKYC) number. Keep this number safe. If you ever open a demat account, buy insurance, or invest directly with an AMC website, providing this 14-digit number lets you skip the KYC process completely on those platforms.
Common Mistakes
- Signing on lined/ruled paper: Signatures uploaded on lined notebook paper are frequently rejected by KRAs because the lines interfere with signature matching software. Always use unlined printer paper.
- Background noise during IPV: If the reviewer cannot clearly hear you read the OTP during the video verification due to TV or traffic noise, the application will be rejected.
- Name mismatch: If the name on your PAN card is "Ravi Kumar Sharma" but your Aadhaar says "Ravi Sharma", the system will flag the mismatch. You will need to get the names aligned on both documents before the KYC is approved.
Troubleshooting
The camera permission pop-up is not appearing: If you are using Chrome on a computer, click the padlock icon in the URL address bar. Find "Camera" and "Microphone" in the site settings list and change them from "Block" to "Allow". Reload the page.
The portal says "Aadhaar linked mobile number not found": You are likely using a phone number that is different from the one registered with UIDAI. You must use the exact phone number linked to your Aadhaar to receive the DigiLocker OTP.
My KYC was rejected due to "Poor Signature Quality": Upload a fresh photo. Ensure you use a dark ink pen (gel or fountain pens work better than light ballpoint pens), use flash if the room is dark, and crop out any surrounding desk or shadows before uploading.
