How to Open an NPS Account Online

Step-by-step guide to opening a National Pension System (NPS) account online via the eNPS portal, generating your PRAN, and choosing your investments.

By HowDoI India TeamLast updated: 25 January 2026Reviewed: 4 February 2026

The National Pension System (NPS) is a voluntary, long-term retirement savings scheme managed by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). While many people open an NPS account to secure their retirement, its most immediate appeal is the tax benefit: it offers an exclusive tax deduction of ₹50,000 under Section 80CCD(1B), over and above the standard ₹1.5 Lakh 80C limit.

You no longer need to visit a bank branch to open an account. You can complete the process entirely online using Aadhaar e-KYC and generate your Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN) instantly.

Understanding Tier-I and Tier-II Accounts

Before you start, you must decide which account type you want to open:

FeatureTier-I (Mandatory)Tier-II (Optional)
PurposeRetirement savingsFlexible investment
Tax BenefitsYes (up to ₹2 Lakhs under Old Regime)No tax benefits
Lock-in PeriodUntil age 60No lock-in

If your primary goal is tax saving, just open a Tier-I account. You can always activate a Tier-II account later if you decide you want to use NPS as a regular mutual-fund-style investment vehicle.

What You Need Before You Start

Documents and prerequisites for online NPS

Step 1: Visit the eNPS Portal

Go to the official eNPS NSDL portal. This is the government-appointed central recordkeeping agency. Click on National Pension System and then click Registration.

Step 2: Choose your registration type

  1. Register With: Select "Aadhaar Offline e-KYC" or "Permanent Account Number (PAN)". Aadhaar is highly recommended because it autofills your demographic details and makes the process instant.
  2. Applicant Type: Select "Individual Subscriber".
  3. Status of Applicant: Select "Citizen of India".
  4. Account Type: Select "Tier I only" or "Tier I & Tier II".

Step 3: Authenticate and fill details

  1. If you chose Aadhaar, you will be prompted to generate an offline Aadhaar XML file or verify via DigiLocker. Follow the on-screen prompts to authenticate with an OTP.
  2. The form will pre-fill your name, photo, and date of birth from Aadhaar.
  3. Fill in any missing personal details (father's name, mother's name).
  4. Enter your contact details (email and mobile) and click Generate Acknowledgement Number. Save this number. If your session times out, you can resume your application using this number.

Step 4: Add bank and nominee details

  1. Bank Details: Enter the account number and IFSC code of your primary bank account. Upload the scanned cancelled cheque. This bank account will be used for any future withdrawals or annuity payouts when you retire.
  2. Nominee Details: Enter the name, age, and relationship of the person who will receive the funds in the unfortunate event of your demise. You can add up to three nominees and specify the percentage share for each.

Step 5: Choose your investment scheme

This is where you decide how your money will grow. You need to make two choices:

1. Select a Pension Fund Manager (PFM): You must choose one manager from the approved list (e.g., SBI Pension Funds, HDFC, LIC, UTI, ICICI). All managers follow strict PFRDA guidelines, so risk levels are similar across the board.

2. Select an Investment Choice:

Choice TypeHow it WorksBest For
Auto Choice (Lifecycle Fund)Your money is automatically allocated across Equity (E), Corporate Debt (C), and Government Bonds (G) based on your age. As you get older, the system automatically moves money from risky equity into safe bonds.Beginners who want a "fill it, shut it, forget it" approach.
Active ChoiceYou decide the exact percentage. You can allocate up to 75% to Equity if you are under age 50. The rest must be split between Corporate and Government debt.Experienced investors who want total control over asset allocation.

Step 6: Make the initial payment

Proceed to the payment gateway. To complete the registration, you must make a mandatory initial contribution.

  • If you selected Tier-I only: Pay a minimum of ₹500.
  • If you selected Tier-I and Tier-II: Pay a minimum of ₹750 (₹500 + ₹250).

You can pay via UPI, Net Banking, or Credit/Debit Card. A small payment gateway convenience fee will be added to the total.

Step 7: Generate PRAN and e-Sign

After the payment is successful, the portal will immediately generate your 12-digit PRAN.

To finish the process legally, you must digitally sign the application:

  1. Click on the e-Sign button on the final screen.
  2. You will be redirected to the NSDL e-Sign service.
  3. Enter your Aadhaar number and click "Get OTP".
  4. Enter the OTP to digitally sign the document.

WARNING

If you do not complete the e-Sign step, your account remains in a "pending" state. You will be forced to print the physical form, sign it with a pen, and courier it to the Central Recordkeeping Agency in Mumbai within 90 days, which defeats the purpose of an online application. Always e-Sign.

Once e-Signed, your registration is fully complete. You will receive a welcome email with your PRAN details. The physical PRAN card and welcome kit will be delivered to your registered address by India Post within 15 to 20 days.

Common Mistakes

  • Entering a mismatched bank account name: The name on your NPS application must perfectly match the name on your bank account. If your bank account says "Miss Priya Sharma" and your Aadhaar/NPS says "Priya Sharma", the initial penny-drop verification might fail.
  • Forgetting the minimum annual contribution: You must deposit at least ₹1,000 every financial year (April to March) into your Tier-I account. If you forget, the account is "frozen" and you will have to pay a ₹100 penalty plus the missing amount to unfreeze it.
  • Choosing 100% Equity: Under Active Choice, you cannot allocate 100% of your funds to the stock market. The PFRDA caps equity exposure at 75% to protect retirement savings. The remaining 25% must go into debt or government bonds.

Troubleshooting

The payment failed but money was deducted: Do not initiate a second payment immediately. The payment gateway reconciliation takes T+2 working days. Check your application status using your Acknowledgement Number after 48 hours. If the payment is still marked as failed, the deducted amount will be auto-refunded to your bank account within 5-7 days.

Aadhaar e-KYC OTP is not arriving: The UIDAI servers can be slow during peak hours. If you do not receive the OTP after a few tries, you can switch the registration method to "PAN". This will require you to manually upload your KYC documents, but it avoids the Aadhaar server dependency.

I selected the wrong Pension Fund Manager: Do not worry. Once your account is active, you can log in to your NPS dashboard and change your Pension Fund Manager online. You are allowed to change your manager once per financial year without any penalty.
