e-Shram is the national database for unorganised workers maintained under the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Registration gives you an e-Shram UAN and digital card you can download after Aadhaar eKYC. The process is free on the official site.
Who can register
Typical eligibility:
- Age 16 to 59
- Not in the organised sector with full EPF/ESIC style coverage as excluded by portal rules
- Willing to share Aadhaar and occupation / family details
WARNING
Register only on eshram.gov.in. Fake apps ask for money and OTP.
Details to keep ready
Ready for e-Shram registration
0 of 5 ready · saved on this device only
Step 1: Send OTP and start registration
- Open eshram.gov.in.
- Choose self-registration / register as worker.
- Enter Aadhaar and consent to eKYC.
- Enter OTP received on the Aadhaar mobile.
Step 2: Fill primary and occupation details
- Confirm name and DOB fetched from Aadhaar.
- Enter education, occupation, and place of work.
- Add nominee / family details if prompted.
- Enter bank account for future scheme credits.
TIP
Pick the occupation category that best matches your real work. Random categories make future scheme targeting harder.
Step 3: Submit and download the card
- Review the preview screen.
- Submit to generate e-Shram UAN.
- Download the e-Shram card PDF.
- Save UAN and keep a DigiLocker / phone copy.
Step 4: Update later if needed
If you change state of work, mobile number, or occupation, use the portal's update services after login with UAN / Aadhaar. Keep bank Aadhaar seeding active for any DBT-linked schemes that use e-Shram data.
Common problems
- OTP not received: update Aadhaar mobile first
- Aadhaar already registered: use forgot UAN / download card instead of creating a duplicate
- CSC operator charging high fees: you can finish the same steps yourself online
- Photo mismatch: re-upload a clear front-facing photo when asked
Gig and migrant workers
If you work across states, register with the address and occupation that reflect your current work pattern. Update when you relocate for long stretches. e-Shram is meant to make migrant unorganised workers visible to welfare delivery, but only if the mobile number stays active for OTP.
After registration
Save UAN offline. When a state announces a relief or insurance scheme for unorganised workers, they often ask for e-Shram UAN first. Not having the PDF on your phone is a avoidable delay during short registration windows.
Family and nominee fields
Fill nominee details carefully. Welfare payouts tied to future schemes may look at those fields. If you share a phone with family, ensure you still control OTP access. Losing the Aadhaar mobile number after registration makes later updates harder until you fix Aadhaar first.
Download a second copy of the card PDF to email. Phones get wiped; UAN recovery is easier when you still have the PDF showing the number.
CSC vs self-registration tradeoffs
Self-registration is free and enough when OTP works. CSCs help workers without smartphones, but insist on a receipt and complete the download yourself before leaving. If an operator says the portal is down and only they can finish later after cash payment, walk out and retry on eshram.gov.in the same evening.
Workers already covered fully under organised-sector social security may see eligibility messages. Read them and do not force duplicate identities. The point of e-Shram is clean data for unorganised workers, not a second ID for people already fully covered elsewhere.
Realistic timelines
Most people lose time waiting on OTP issues, unclear scans, or a portal outage rather than on the core form itself. Build a small buffer into your plans. If a visa, loan, or registration appointment depends on this document, start at least one or two weeks earlier than the brochure minimum.
Keep a folder (phone and laptop) with:
- Application / acknowledgment PDF
- Fee receipt or UTR
- Identity proofs used in the upload
- Screenshots of status pages with dates visible
When a helpdesk asks for proof, you should be able to send it in one email without hunting through WhatsApp.
If the portal is down
Official sites in India often slow down on weekday evenings and near due dates. Try early morning, switch browsers, or use a less congested network. Prefer the gov.in domain even when a third-party site claims to be faster. If money was debited without an acknowledgment, wait for the stated reconciliation window and contact the listed support channel with the bank reference before you pay again.
After you finish
Update every dependent record that still shows old data: DigiLocker, employer HRMS, bank KYC, insurer, and any travel profile. A finished application that never propagates to the places you actually use will feel unfinished the next time you need it in a hurry.
