How to Change Name on Aadhaar

Update your name on Aadhaar online or at a centre. Documents for marriage or gazette change, fees, and tracking.

By HowDoI India TeamLast updated: 30 August 2026

Your Aadhaar name is the spine for bank KYC, PAN linking, SIM, and DigiLocker. If the spelling is wrong, or you changed your name after marriage or by gazette, update Aadhaar first, then cascade the change to PAN, passport, and bank accounts.

Decide online vs centre

Small spelling fix with clear proofmyAadhaar online update (when offered)

IMPORTANT

Carry documents that clearly show the requested spelling. UIDAI operators reject vague affidavits without supporting IDs listed in the official document list.

Confirm accepted proofs on the UIDAI supporting documents page before you visit.

Step 1: Check current data

  1. Download e-Aadhaar from myAadhaar.
  2. Note exact spelling, including initials and spaces.
  3. Check remaining demographic update quota if shown.

Step 2A: Online update (when available)

  1. Log in to myAadhaar.
  2. Choose demographic update / name update service.
  3. Enter the new name exactly as on the proof.
  4. Upload document scans within size limits.
  5. Pay the fee and note the URN / SRN.

Step 2B: Update at an Aadhaar centre

  1. Book a slot if your city requires it, or walk into an authorised centre.
  2. Fill the update form with the new name.
  3. Give biometrics and documents for scanning.
  4. Pay the fee and collect the acknowledgement with URN.
  5. Track status on myAadhaar → Track Aadhaar Update Request.

TIP

After approval, download fresh e-Aadhaar before ordering a PVC card so the plastic prints the new name.

Step 3: Cascade to other IDs

  1. Update PAN name (correction form).
  2. Update bank KYC and UPI profile.
  3. Update passport if you travel.
  4. Re-link PAN-Aadhaar if the portal asks after demographic edits.

Common problems

  • Proof name still shows old surname only
  • Online upload rejected for blurry marriage certificate
  • Update locked because quota exhausted (visit helpdesk / follow UIDAI guidance)
  • PAN linking fails until PAN also matches

Spelling standards that avoid repeat visits

Decide one English spelling and use it everywhere: Aadhaar, PAN, bank, and passport. Switching between "Mohd" and "Mohammed" across documents creates years of KYC friction. If your regional-language Aadhaar line is correct but English transliteration is wrong, fix the English field with proof that shows Latin spelling.

Fees and acknowledgement tracking

Demographic updates attract a UIDAI fee. Pay only at the official centre or myAadhaar checkout. Track the URN until "document accepted / update completed", then download e-Aadhaar. Do not order PVC or book passport appointments on the old spelling while the update is still pending.

Centre visit day tips

Reach early with originals and photocopies. Soft copies alone often fail. Verify the operator typed the name correctly on the preview screen before you give biometrics. Once submitted, corrections need another update cycle.

If your update is rejected, read the SMS reason. Most rejections are document quality or proof mismatch, not mysterious system errors. Re-scan in daylight and try again with a stronger supporting ID from the UIDAI list.

Realistic timelines

Most people lose time waiting on OTP issues, unclear scans, or a portal outage rather than on the core form itself. Build a small buffer into your plans. If a visa, loan, or registration appointment depends on this document, start at least one or two weeks earlier than the brochure minimum.

Keep a folder (phone and laptop) with:

  1. Application / acknowledgment PDF
  2. Fee receipt or UTR
  3. Identity proofs used in the upload
  4. Screenshots of status pages with dates visible

When a helpdesk asks for proof, you should be able to send it in one email without hunting through WhatsApp.

If the portal is down

Official sites in India often slow down on weekday evenings and near due dates. Try early morning, switch browsers, or use a less congested network. Prefer the gov.in domain even when a third-party site claims to be faster. If money was debited without an acknowledgment, wait for the stated reconciliation window and contact the listed support channel with the bank reference before you pay again.

After you finish

Update every dependent record that still shows old data: DigiLocker, employer HRMS, bank KYC, insurer, and any travel profile. A finished application that never propagates to the places you actually use will feel unfinished the next time you need it in a hurry.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change Aadhaar name fully online?
Minor demographic edits may work online with supporting documents. Major name changes often need an Aadhaar enrolment / update centre with biometric authentication.
What proof works after marriage?
Marriage certificate plus an ID showing the new name is commonly used. Check the live UIDAI supporting document list for your case.
How many times can I update name?
UIDAI limits demographic updates. Check remaining update count on myAadhaar before you submit.
Will PAN update automatically?
No. After Aadhaar name change, update PAN and other KYC records separately so linking and banking do not break.
