To print a new name in your Indian passport, apply for re-issue on Passport Seva with the reason for change in personal particulars. This is common after marriage, divorce, or a legal name change through deed poll / gazette.
Plan the order of updates
Recommended sequence for fewer mismatches:
- Update Aadhaar name
- Update PAN name
- Apply for passport re-issue with proofs
- Update tickets, visas, and bank KYC

Step 1: Fill re-issue application
- Log in to Passport Seva.
- Choose Fresh / Re-issue → Re-issue.
- Select reason: change in existing personal particulars (name).
- Enter old passport details accurately.
- Type the new name exactly as you want it printed and as shown on proofs.
Step 2: Pay and book PSK appointment
- Pay normal or Tatkal fees only if you qualify and have Tatkal-compatible documents.
- Book PSK / POPSK appointment.
- Print the application receipt and annexures.
Step 3: Appointment day
- Carry originals and copies.
- Submit old passport for cancellation processing as instructed.
- Complete biometrics and interview questions about the name change.
- Track file status online; complete police verification if initiated.
TIP
If you travel soon, check visa pages before surrendering the old booklet. Ask the officer how cancelled passports with valid visas are returned.
Step 4: After you get the new passport
- Update airline profiles and immigration accounts.
- Apply for visa transfers where the destination country allows it.
- Update DigiLocker and any e-visa logins with the new number.
Common mistakes
- Applying as Fresh instead of Re-issue
- Name spelling different from Aadhaar and marriage certificate
- Missing gazette when the Document Advisor requires it
- Assuming employer ID alone is enough for a full name rewrite
Surname only vs full name rewrite
Marriage-based surname updates are common and usually document-light compared with a full legal name change. Full rewrites almost always need deed poll / gazette plus IDs that already show the new name. Trying to jump straight to passport without Aadhaar and PAN updates leads to PSK objections.
If you hold foreign visas, list them before the appointment and ask how the cancelled passport will be returned. Some travellers need the old booklet for visa transfer stamps.
DigiLocker and airline profiles
After the new passport is delivered, refresh DigiLocker so the old booklet is not the only document apps pull. Update airline frequent-flyer profiles, immigration account logins, and any e-visa portals that stored the old passport number. Out-of-date profiles create check-in mismatches even when the physical passport is fine.
Police verification for name change cases
Name change re-issues often trigger fresh police verification even if you renewed recently with the old name. Be reachable on the form mobile number and keep marriage or gazette papers ready if the constable asks. If you travel between cities for work, pick the address where you can actually receive the visit, not a vacant ancestral address.
After issue, shred or securely store photocopies of the old name passport bio page. Identity fraud thrives on discarded KYC packs that show both old and new names without context.
Realistic timelines
Most people lose time waiting on OTP issues, unclear scans, or a portal outage rather than on the core form itself. Build a small buffer into your plans. If a visa, loan, or registration appointment depends on this document, start at least one or two weeks earlier than the brochure minimum.
Keep a folder (phone and laptop) with:
- Application / acknowledgment PDF
- Fee receipt or UTR
- Identity proofs used in the upload
- Screenshots of status pages with dates visible
When a helpdesk asks for proof, you should be able to send it in one email without hunting through WhatsApp.
If the portal is down
Official sites in India often slow down on weekday evenings and near due dates. Try early morning, switch browsers, or use a less congested network. Prefer the gov.in domain even when a third-party site claims to be faster. If money was debited without an acknowledgment, wait for the stated reconciliation window and contact the listed support channel with the bank reference before you pay again.
After you finish
Update every dependent record that still shows old data: DigiLocker, employer HRMS, bank KYC, insurer, and any travel profile. A finished application that never propagates to the places you actually use will feel unfinished the next time you need it in a hurry.
