If you have recently moved to a new home, updating the address on your Aadhaar card is one of the first things you should do. Many services (bank account opening, SIM card purchase, PF withdrawal) use your Aadhaar address for verification, and having an outdated address can create problems during KYC checks.
The good news is that address updates can be done entirely online through the myAadhaar portal. You do not need to visit an enrollment center unless you want to update biometric data (fingerprints/iris). The entire process takes about 10 minutes to submit and typically completes within 3 to 15 days.
What you need before you start
- A scanned copy (JPEG, PNG, or PDF, max 2MB) of a valid Proof of Address (PoA) document.
- Access to the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar to receive the OTP.

TIP
The most hassle-free document to use is a recent electricity or water bill (not older than 3 months), because it clearly shows both your name and the new address. Bank passbooks work too, but make sure the passbook has been updated with the new address at your bank branch first.
Step 1: Log in to the myAadhaar Portal
- Go to the myAadhaar portal and click Login.
- Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and the CAPTCHA code.
- Click Send OTP and enter the code sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number to log in.
WARNING
The OTP is sent to the mobile number currently linked to your Aadhaar, not necessarily the number you use daily. If you have changed your phone number and never updated it with UIDAI, you must first visit an Aadhaar enrollment center to update your mobile number (this requires biometric verification in person). See our mobile number update guide.
Step 2: Select the update option
On the dashboard, click on the Address Update tile. Then, select Update Aadhaar Online.
Read the instructions on the next screen carefully and click Proceed to Update Aadhaar.
Step 3: Enter the new address
- Select Address from the list of fields you want to update and click Proceed.
- You will see your current address displayed on the screen.
- Scroll down and enter your new address details in the provided fields: house/flat number, street name, landmark, locality, village/town/city, district, state, and PIN code.
IMPORTANT
Enter the address exactly as it appears on your proof document. If your electricity bill says "Flat 3A, Prestige Apartment, Koramangala" and you type "3A, Prestige Apartments, Koramangala" (note the plural), the UIDAI operator may reject the update due to the spelling mismatch. Be precise.
Step 4: Upload your Proof of Address
- Select the type of document you are uploading from the drop-down menu (e.g., "Electricity Bill," "Passport," etc.).
- Click Choose File and upload the scanned copy of your document. Ensure the scan is clear, all text is legible, and the file size is under 2MB.
- Review the changes on the preview screen.
- Check the consent boxes acknowledging that the information is correct.
Alternative: Head of Family (HoF) Based Update
If you do not have any valid address proof in your own name (common for children, recently married spouses, or people who just moved to a new city and do not have bills in their name yet), you can use the Head of Family option. This is a two-step approval process:
- Select the HoF Update option on the portal (instead of uploading a PoA document).
- Enter the Aadhaar number of your Head of Family (father, mother, spouse, or any adult family member who has a valid address at the new location).
- Upload a proof of relationship document such as:
- Ration Card showing both your names
- Birth Certificate (if parent-child relationship)
- Marriage Certificate (if spouse relationship)
- Passport showing parent/spouse names
- Pay the ₹50 fee.
- The HoF will receive a link via SMS on their Aadhaar-linked mobile number. They must log in to their own myAadhaar portal and approve your request within 30 days. If they do not approve it within 30 days, the request expires automatically and you must start over.
TIP
Coordinate with your family member before initiating the HoF request. Many requests fail because the HoF never sees the SMS, or does not know how to approve it on their portal. Walk them through the process in person if possible.
Step 5: Pay the update fee
You will be redirected to a payment gateway. Pay the non-refundable update fee of ₹50 using a credit/debit card, net banking, or UPI.
Step 6: Save your URN and track status
Once payment is successful, you will receive an acknowledgement slip with a 14-digit Update Request Number (URN). Save this number. You will also receive it via SMS.
To track your update status:
- Go to the myAadhaar portal and click Check Aadhaar Update Status.
- Enter your Aadhaar number and the 14-digit URN.
- The status will show as "Processing," "Completed," or "Rejected."
Expected timelines:
| Scenario | Typical Processing Time | Maximum Time |
|---|---|---|
| Standard address update (with PoA) | 3-10 working days | 30 days |
| HoF-based update | 5-15 working days (after HoF approval) | 30 days after HoF approval |
Once the update is complete, you can download your updated e-Aadhaar from the myAadhaar portal. If you need a new physical PVC Aadhaar card with the updated address, you can order one for ₹50 from the same portal.
Common Mistakes
- Using an expired or outdated utility bill: UIDAI requires the utility bill to be no more than 3 months old. An electricity bill from 6 months ago will be rejected.
- Name mismatch between PoA and Aadhaar: If your electricity bill says "Rahul Kumar" but your Aadhaar says "Rahul K," the update will be rejected. Get the name corrected on either document first.
- Uploading a blurry or cropped scan: The UIDAI operator who reviews your request must be able to read every detail on the document. If any part is cut off or illegible, the request is rejected.
- Forgetting to update other documents: Changing your Aadhaar address does not change your address on your PAN, bank accounts, voter ID, or driving license. Update each service separately.
Troubleshooting
My update request was rejected. What do I do? Check the rejection reason (available via Track Status). Common reasons are: document not clear, name mismatch, or document type not acceptable. Fix the issue and submit a new request. You will need to pay ₹50 again for each new attempt.
I do not have any address proof in my name or a Head of Family at this address: In this case, you must visit a physical Aadhaar enrollment center. Carry a Gazetted Officer's letter or a signed declaration from your landlord along with the landlord's ID proof. The enrollment center operator has discretion to accept these as alternative proof.
The portal keeps saying "service unavailable": The myAadhaar portal experiences heavy traffic, especially during the first week of the month. Try during off-peak hours (before 9 AM or after 9 PM IST).
My HoF never received the approval SMS: Ask them to check their SMS spam/junk folder. If they still cannot find it, they can log in to their own myAadhaar portal, go to the "Address Update Requests" section, and look for pending approval requests. If nothing appears, the request may not have been submitted correctly. Try again.
