Renewing an Indian passport is a re-issue application on the Passport Seva portal, not a separate "renew" button. The flow feels like a fresh application, but you select re-issue and the reason (validity expired / due to expire, pages exhausted, damaged, or particulars changed).
Step 0: Check what kind of re-issue you need
Common reasons:
- Validity expired or expiring soon
- Exhaustion of pages
- Damaged passport
- Change in personal particulars (address, name, appearance)
IMPORTANT
If only address changed and the booklet is still valid for years, you may still need re-issue for the new address print. DigiLocker alone does not update the printed passport address.

Use the official Document Advisor on passportindia.gov.in for your exact case. Lists differ for minors, government staff, and Tatkal.
Step 1: Register / log in
- Open Passport Seva and log in (or create an account with email and mobile).
- Choose Apply for Fresh Passport / Re-issue of Passport.
- Select Re-issue and fill the form carefully with the old passport number.
Step 2: Fill the online form
- Enter personal details exactly as you want them printed.
- Provide the old passport number, issue date, and place of issue.
- Mention whether any particulars changed.
- Save the form and generate the Application Reference Number (ARN).
TIP
Keep name spelling consistent with Aadhaar and PAN if you can. Mismatches create friction later for tickets and visas.
Step 3: Pay fee and book appointment
- Pay online (normal or Tatkal fee as selected).
- Book a PSK / POPSK / Passport Seva Camp appointment.

Carry printed application receipt, original passport, and listed proofs.
Step 4: At the Passport Seva Kendra
- Token → A counter (documents) → B counter (biometrics / photo) → C counter (granting officer) in most PSKs.
- Surrender the old booklet when asked for cancellation / stamping as per process.
- Track status on the portal with file number.
Police verification, if required, happens before or after issue depending on the case type. Be reachable on the mobile number in the form.
Step 5: Delivery
Passports are usually delivered by Speed Post to the address in the application. Track with the Speed Post number once status shows dispatched.
Common mistakes
- Selecting Fresh instead of Re-issue
- Wrong old passport number
- Address proof older than the portal's accepted period
- Missing annexure signatures
- Booking Tatkal without Tatkal-compatible documents
Validity and travel planning
Many countries want at least six months of passport validity on the date of travel or on the date of visa application. If your passport expires in four months and you have a trip booked, start re-issue now rather than hoping immigration will be flexible.
If pages are full but the passport is still valid for years, re-issue for exhaustion of pages. Do not staple extra sheets or carry loose visa papers as a workaround.
Fees, Tatkal, and minors
Fee tables change. Check the live Passport Seva fee schedule for 36-page vs 60-page booklets and Tatkal premiums. Tatkal is not a shortcut past missing documents. For minors, both parents' presence or consent paperwork usually matters more than for adult renewals. Carry school ID only as support, not as a replacement for birth proof when the advisor lists birth proof.
Realistic timelines
Most people lose time waiting on OTP issues, unclear scans, or a portal outage rather than on the core form itself. Build a small buffer into your plans. If a visa, loan, or registration appointment depends on this document, start at least one or two weeks earlier than the brochure minimum.
Keep a folder (phone and laptop) with:
- Application / acknowledgment PDF
- Fee receipt or UTR
- Identity proofs used in the upload
- Screenshots of status pages with dates visible
When a helpdesk asks for proof, you should be able to send it in one email without hunting through WhatsApp.
If the portal is down
Official sites in India often slow down on weekday evenings and near due dates. Try early morning, switch browsers, or use a less congested network. Prefer the gov.in domain even when a third-party site claims to be faster. If money was debited without an acknowledgment, wait for the stated reconciliation window and contact the listed support channel with the bank reference before you pay again.
After you finish
Update every dependent record that still shows old data: DigiLocker, employer HRMS, bank KYC, insurer, and any travel profile. A finished application that never propagates to the places you actually use will feel unfinished the next time you need it in a hurry.
