The e-EPIC (Electronic Electoral Photo Identity Card) is a secure, non-editable PDF version of your Voter ID. The Election Commission of India (ECI) introduced this to save citizens the hassle of waiting for physical cards to arrive by post or replacing lost cards at the local ERO office.

It is equally valid as a physical Voter ID for proving your identity and for voting at polling booths. Here is how to download it.

What is the e-EPIC?

The e-EPIC is not just a scanned image of a card. It is a secure digital document that contains:

  • Your photograph (as registered with the Election Commission)
  • Your full name and relative's name (father/husband)
  • Your address, constituency, and polling booth details
  • A secure QR code holding your encrypted demographic data, which polling officers can scan to verify the document is authentic and has not been tampered with
  • Digital signatures from the ECI ensuring document integrity

You can print this PDF, cut it to card size, and laminate it yourself. It is legally valid everywhere that accepts a Voter ID as proof of identity.

Before You Start

What you need to download e-EPIC

Step 1: Find Your EPIC Number (If You Forgot It)

If you have your Voter ID card or know the number, skip to Step 2. If you have lost the card and do not remember the number:

  1. Visit the Electoral Search Portal.
  2. Select Search by Details (not EPIC Number, since you do not have it).
  3. Enter your Name, Father's/Husband's Name, Age or Date of Birth, Gender, State, and District.
  4. Enter the CAPTCHA and click Search.
  5. Locate your name in the results list. Each result shows the constituency, part number, serial number, and most importantly, the EPIC Number listed next to your name.
  6. Write down the EPIC Number. You will need it in the next step.

TIP

If the search returns too many results, add more details like your Assembly Constituency or filter by age. If you recently moved and applied for a transfer, search in both your old and new districts.

Step 2: Create an Account on the Voters' Portal

To download the card, you must have an account on the official ECI portal.

  1. Go to the Voters' Service Portal.
  2. Click on Sign Up (if you do not have an account).
  3. Enter your mobile number, email address (optional), and the CAPTCHA.
  4. Verify with the OTP sent to your mobile.
  5. Create a secure password.
  6. Once registered, click Log In and enter your credentials.

WARNING

Only use voters.eci.gov.in. The older nvsp.in portal has been deprecated and now redirects to the new site. Beware of fake apps on the Play Store or third-party websites that charge money to download your Voter ID. The official download is always free.

Step 3: Download the e-EPIC

  1. After logging in, click on the E-EPIC Download button on the dashboard.
  2. Select I have EPIC no. (or select Reference Number if you are a newly registered voter who has not received an EPIC number yet).
  3. Enter your EPIC Number.
  4. Select your State from the dropdown menu.
  5. Click Search.
  6. Your basic details (Name, Relative's Name, State, masked mobile number) will appear on the screen. Verify that these are correct.
  7. Click Send OTP.
  8. Enter the OTP received on the registered mobile number linked to the Voter ID.
  9. Click Verify.
  10. Click the Download e-EPIC button. A PDF file will be downloaded to your device.

The Biggest Hurdle: Mobile Number Not Linked

The most common reason people fail to download their e-EPIC is that their mobile number is not linked to their Voter ID in the ECI database, or the linked number is an old one they no longer use.

If the portal says "Your mobile number is not registered in Eroll", you cannot bypass the OTP step. You must link your number first.

How to Link Your Mobile Number (Form 8)

  1. Stay logged in to the Voters' Portal.
  2. Click on Fill Form 8 (used for shifting, correction, replacement, or PWD marking).
  3. Select Self (if you are applying for yourself).
  4. In the application type, select Correction of Entries in Existing Electoral Roll.
  5. Scroll down to the correction options and check the box for Mobile Number.
  6. Enter your new mobile number and verify it with an OTP.
  7. Upload a recent passport-size photo if prompted.
  8. Submit the form. You will receive a reference number.

Timeline: Form 8 verification takes time because it goes to the local Booth Level Officer (BLO) for physical verification and approval. This typically takes 15 to 30 days. The BLO may visit your registered address to confirm your identity. Once approved, return to Step 3 to download your e-EPIC.

TIP

If the Form 8 approval has been pending for more than 30 days, call the Voter Helpline at 1950 and provide your Form 8 reference number. They can check the status and escalate it to the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO).

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing EPIC Number with Voter Serial Number: The EPIC Number is the alphanumeric code on your Voter ID card (e.g., ABC1234567). The serial number is your position in the electoral roll for your booth. They are different.
  • Not linking mobile number before elections: If you wait until election season to link your mobile and download e-EPIC, the BLO approval can take even longer due to the workload.
  • Using third-party apps: Several apps on the Play Store claim to provide e-EPIC downloads. These are unofficial and may store your personal data. Always use the official voters.eci.gov.in portal.
