Keeping track of your Employee Provident Fund (EPF) balance is important, whether you are planning to apply for a home loan advance, changing jobs, or tracking your retirement corpus.
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) provides four different ways to check your balance. To use any of these methods, your UAN (Universal Account Number) must be activated. If you haven't activated it yet, see our UAN activation guide first.
Here are all four ways to check your PF balance, starting with the most detailed.
Method 1: The EPFO Passbook Portal (Most Detailed)
This method provides a complete month-by-month breakdown of contributions, interest credited, and withdrawals.
- Go to the official EPFO Member Passbook Portal. (Note: This is a different URL from the main member portal).
- Enter your UAN, Password, and solve the simple math CAPTCHA (e.g., 25 - 4 = ?).
- Click Login.
- Once logged in, select your Member ID from the dropdown. (If you have worked at multiple companies, you will see multiple IDs. Select the current one).
- Click View Passbook (New: Yearly) to see a summary, or View Passbook (Old: Full) for a detailed list of all transactions.
- Understanding the balance: Look at the bottom row. Your total PF balance available for withdrawal (subject to rules) is the sum of the Employee Share and Employer Share columns.
NOTE
The Pension Contribution column shows funds in the EPS (Employee Pension Scheme). This money does not earn interest and cannot be fully withdrawn unless you have less than 10 years of service and have been unemployed for 2 months.
Method 2: The UMANG App (Most Reliable)
The UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) app is the government's official app for various services. It is often more reliable when the main EPFO website is down.
- Download the UMANG app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Open the app and search for EPFO.
- Tap on the EPFO service, then select View Passbook.
- Enter your UAN and tap Get OTP.
- An OTP will be sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. Enter it and submit.
- Select your company (Member ID).
- The app will display your detailed passbook, showing your employee share, employer share, and pension contributions. You can also download the passbook as a PDF.
Method 3: Missed Call Service (Fastest, No Internet Needed)
If your UAN is activated and your mobile number is linked, this is the quickest way to check your total balance.
- From the mobile number registered with your UAN, dial 011-22901406.
- Let it ring. The call will disconnect automatically after two rings. (It is completely free).
- Within a minute or two, you will receive an SMS from EPFO.
- The SMS will contain:
- Your name and date of birth
- KYC status (whether Aadhaar and PAN are linked)
- Last contribution amount
- Total PF Balance
WARNING
This method only works if you call from the exact mobile number registered in your EPFO profile. If you have changed your number but not updated it in EPFO, the missed call will not trigger an SMS.
Method 4: SMS Service
You can also send a text message to get your balance. This is useful if you want the SMS reply in a specific regional language.
- Open your messaging app.
- Type: EPFOHO UAN ENG
- ENG stands for English. You can replace it with HIN (Hindi), TEL (Telugu), PUN (Punjabi), GUJ (Gujarati), MAR (Marathi), KAN (Kannada), TAM (Tamil), MAL (Malayalam), or BEN (Bengali).
- Send this SMS to 7738299899 from your registered mobile number.
- You will receive a reply containing your total PF balance and last contribution details.
Why Interest May Not Show in Your Passbook
EPFO declares the interest rate for the financial year (April to March) usually around March or April of the following year. However, the actual crediting of interest into individual member passbooks is a slow, phased process that can take several months.
If you are checking your passbook in August or September and do not see the interest credited for the previous financial year ending in March, do not panic. It is perfectly normal. Whenever the interest is finally credited, it is calculated from the correct backdated period. You do not lose any money due to the delay.
Common Problems
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| "Invalid UAN or Password" on Passbook portal | Ensure you have activated your UAN. If you just activated it or changed the password, you must wait 6 hours before logging into the passbook portal. |
| Passbook portal shows "Service Unavailable" | The site is overloaded. Try using the UMANG app or the missed call service instead. |
| No SMS received after missed call | Your KYC (Aadhaar, PAN, Bank) might be pending approval, or you are calling from a different mobile number than the one registered with EPFO. |
| Previous company balance missing | You need to transfer the PF balance from your old Member ID to your current one. See our UAN merge/transfer guide. |
