Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government small-savings scheme for a girl child. A parent or legal guardian opens the account in her name, deposits for a fixed period, and the money grows at the notified SSY interest rate with tax benefits under the usual small-savings rules (check the current Finance Ministry / NSI circular for the rate and tax clauses).

You cannot finish enrolment fully online. The account is opened at a counter. After that, many people add money through net banking, UPI to the bank SSY account, or India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) for post-office accounts.

Who can open it

  • One guardian (usually a parent) opens the account in the name of a girl child who has not turned 10.
  • In general, a family can open accounts for up to two girl children. Twins or triplets are handled under the scheme rules at the counter if you already have accounts for two girls.
  • The girl does not need her own Aadhaar for opening. The guardian needs KYC (Aadhaar and PAN / Form 60 as asked by the post office or bank).

What to carry

Carry originals for verification plus self-attested photocopies.

Step 1: Choose post office or bank

SSY is available at:

  • Any India Post post office that handles savings schemes
  • Authorised branches of public and private sector banks (for example SBI and other notified banks)

Interest rate, deposit limits, and maturity rules are scheme rules, not “better at bank vs post office.” Pick the place you can visit easily and where you already bank, if that helps later deposits.

Check scheme pages on India Post or ask your bank’s small-savings desk. National Savings Institute scheme material is at nsiindia.gov.in.

Step 2: Fill the account-opening form

Ask for the Sukanya Samriddhi / SSA Form-1 (sometimes labelled SSA-1). Fill the girl’s name exactly as on the birth certificate, your details as guardian, nomination if asked, and the initial deposit amount.

NOTE

Spellings and dates must match the birth certificate. Mismatches delay opening.

Step 3: Submit KYC and birth proof at the counter

Hand over the form, birth certificate, guardian KYC, photos, and the initial deposit. Staff verify documents and open the account in the girl’s name. You operate it as guardian until she turns 18 (then she can take over with the papers the branch asks for).

Step 4: Collect the passbook / account proof

You should get a passbook or account confirmation with the account number. Keep it safe. Note the account number for standing instructions or IPPB / net-banking deposits later.

Step 5: Plan yearly deposits

  • Deposit at least ₹250 every financial year (in multiples of ₹50).
  • You can deposit more, up to a maximum of ₹1.5 lakh in a financial year.
  • Deposits are allowed for 15 years from the date of opening. The account matures 21 years from opening (or earlier if the girl marries after turning 18).

WARNING

Penalty for Default: If you fail to deposit the minimum ₹250 in a financial year, the account becomes "irregular." You can revive it by paying a penalty of ₹50 per defaulted year along with the minimum deposit for those years.

NOTE

Early Closure: The account can only be closed prematurely in extreme cases (death of the girl child or life-threatening medical emergencies). Partial withdrawals (up to 50% of the balance) are allowed for higher education once the girl turns 18 or completes 10th standard.

Interest is compounded annually. Rates are notified periodically by the government (for example, 8.2% p.a. in early 2024). Use our SSY calculator with the current rate from India Post / your bank.

Step 6: Deposit online after opening (optional)

Once the account exists:

  • Bank SSY: use that bank’s net banking / app if the product is linked.
  • Post office SSY: many guardians use the India Post Payments Bank app or linked channels to send money without visiting every time.

Opening still needs the branch visit. Top-ups are where “online” helps.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting until the child is almost 10 and missing the cut-off.
  • Bringing only the child’s Aadhaar and forgetting the birth certificate.
  • Depositing nothing in a financial year (account can attract penalties / become irregular under scheme rules).
  • Assuming the interest rate on a blog from last year still applies.

Tax note (short)

Deposits may qualify for deduction under Section 80C within the overall limit, and interest / maturity treatment follows the notified EEE-style small-savings position for SSY. For filing help, see e-file your income tax return and run numbers on the income tax calculator. This is not tax advice; confirm with the latest Income Tax / CBDT materials if your case is unusual.
