FASTag is a reloadable RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tag that allows automatic deduction of toll charges, letting you pass through toll plazas without stopping for cash transactions. Since February 2021, it is mandatory for all four-wheelers in India. Driving through a toll plaza without a valid, active FASTag means you pay double the toll as a penalty.

You can buy a FASTag through your bank, online payment apps, or directly at highway toll plazas. This guide walks you through the purchase, activation, and ongoing management of your FASTag.

Where to Buy a FASTag

You have several options, each with different activation processes and funding methods:

SourceActivationFunding MethodTypical Cost
Your Bank (HDFC, SBI, ICICI, etc.)Comes pre-activated and linked to your savings accountDirect debit from savings account₹200 security deposit + ₹200 minimum recharge
Payment Apps (Paytm, PhonePe, Amazon Pay)Comes pre-activated within the appApp wallet balance or linked bank account₹150-250 (including deposit)
Amazon / FlipkartManual DIY activation via My FASTag appPrepaid wallet via My FASTag app₹400-500 (tag + deposit + initial balance)
NHAI Toll Plaza (Point of Sale)Activated on the spotCash or card₹500 (deposit + balance)

TIP

If you already have a savings account with HDFC, SBI, ICICI, Kotak, or Axis Bank, buying the FASTag from your own bank is the smoothest option. It comes pre-activated, auto-debits tolls from your account (so no manual recharging), and your bank's net banking portal will show all toll transactions in real time.

Step 1: Buy FASTag Online

Through your bank:

  1. Log in to your bank's net banking portal or mobile app.
  2. Search for the FASTag section (usually under "Cards" or "Services").
  3. Enter your vehicle registration number and upload a photo or scan of your Registration Certificate (RC).
  4. Pay the issuance fee (typically ₹200 refundable security deposit + ₹200 minimum recharge balance).
  5. The physical tag will be delivered to your registered address within 3-7 working days.

Through payment apps (Paytm/PhonePe):

  1. Open the app and search for "Buy FASTag" or "FASTag."
  2. Enter your vehicle registration number and upload the RC.
  3. Pay via UPI, wallet, or linked bank account.
  4. The tag ships within 2-5 working days.

Step 2: Wait for Delivery

The physical RFID sticker will be delivered to your address. If you bought it through a bank where you hold an account, it usually arrives pre-activated and ready to use. Check the package for the tag, an instruction card, and a return label.

Step 3: Activate a DIY FASTag

If you purchased a neutral FASTag from Amazon, Flipkart, or an NHAI point of sale, you need to activate it manually before it will work at toll plazas.

  1. Download the My FASTag App from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  2. Open the app and click on Activate FASTag.
  3. Select the source where you bought the tag (Amazon, NHAI, etc.).
  4. Scan the QR code printed on the back of the FASTag sticker. If QR scanning does not work, you can manually enter the 16-digit tag ID printed below the barcode.
  5. Enter your vehicle details: registration number, vehicle class (car, SUV, bus, etc.), and chassis number (found on your RC).
  6. Upload a photo of the front of your RC.
  7. Link the FASTag to a payment method: you can link it to an existing bank account or fund it via a prepaid wallet within the app.
  8. Complete KYC by entering your PAN or Aadhaar number.

WARNING

The tag will only work at toll plazas once the activation is fully processed, which can take up to 24 hours from the time you complete the steps above. Do not plan a highway trip on the same day you activate a DIY tag.

Step 4: Stick it on your windshield

Once activated, follow these steps for correct installation:

  1. Clean the inside of your car's windshield (the area right behind the rearview mirror) with a dry cloth. The glass must be completely clean and dry.
  2. Remove the adhesive liner from the back of the FASTag sticker.
  3. Press the tag firmly onto the glass, behind the rearview mirror. The printed text should face inward (readable from inside the car).
  4. Hold it in place for 10 seconds to ensure strong adhesion.

TIP

Do not place the tag behind a tinted section of the windshield. Heavy tinting can block the RFID signal and cause scanning failures at toll plazas. The ideal position is the clear strip at the very top of the windshield.

Step 5: Recharge and maintain

If linked to your bank account: Tolls are auto-debited from your savings account. No manual recharging needed. Just ensure your account has sufficient balance.

If linked to a prepaid wallet: You must manually recharge before the balance runs out. You can recharge via UPI, net banking, or debit cards through the My FASTag app, your bank's portal, or the payment app you purchased from.

Wallet limits based on KYC status:

KYC LevelMaximum Wallet Balance
Minimum KYC (Aadhaar OTP only)₹10,000
Full KYC (Aadhaar + PAN verified)₹1,00,000

Common FASTag Issues and Fixes

Tag Blacklisted

If your tag balance drops below the minimum threshold (usually ₹100), or if your KYC has expired, your FASTag is automatically "blacklisted" by NPCI. When this happens:

  • The toll gate will not open for your vehicle.
  • You will be charged double the toll in cash.

Fix: Recharge your tag above the minimum balance and complete any pending KYC verification. The un-blacklisting takes 30 to 45 minutes to reflect across all toll plazas nationwide. Do not argue with the toll operator during this waiting period; they cannot override the system manually.

Double Deduction at Toll Plaza

If you notice that toll has been deducted twice for the same transaction:

  1. Note the toll plaza name, date, time, and transaction amounts from your FASTag statement.
  2. Raise a complaint on the IHMCL Complaint Portal or call the NHAI helpline at 1033.
  3. The refund typically takes 7 to 15 working days to process.

Damaged or Non-Scanning Tag

If your windshield breaks or the tag physically stops scanning:

  • You cannot just buy a second FASTag for the same vehicle (NHAI's "One Vehicle, One FASTag" rule).
  • You must first close your existing FASTag account through your issuer (bank or app).
  • Wait for confirmation that the old tag is deactivated.
  • Only then apply for a replacement FASTag.

Your ₹200 security deposit from the old tag is refundable after closure.

Tag Not Detected Despite Being Active

If your tag has sufficient balance and is not blacklisted but still does not scan:

  • Check if the tag is placed correctly (behind the rearview mirror, not on a tinted section).
  • Check if the adhesive has weakened and the tag has shifted position.
  • In rare cases, the RFID chip itself may be faulty. Contact your issuer for a free replacement under warranty.

Troubleshooting

I bought a FASTag but it says "Vehicle already tagged": This means there is already an active FASTag linked to your vehicle's registration number. If you bought a used car, the previous owner's FASTag may still be active. Contact NHAI at 1033 or visit the nearest toll plaza with your RC and ID proof to request deactivation of the old tag.

My bank-linked FASTag is deducting from the wrong account: Log in to your bank's net banking portal, go to the FASTag management section, and change the linked funding account.

The app says my RC is invalid during activation: The OCR system sometimes fails to read RC photos. Try uploading a clearer photo with good lighting. If the system still rejects it, manually enter the details instead of relying on auto-fill.

Frequently asked questions

Is FASTag mandatory for all vehicles?
Yes, FASTag is mandatory for all four-wheelers (cars, trucks, buses) since February 2021, as per NHAI directive. Vehicles without a valid FASTag are charged double the toll amount at toll plazas.
Can I use one FASTag for two vehicles?
No. NHAI enforces a strict 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' policy. Each FASTag is linked to a specific vehicle registration number. If you try to use the same tag on a different vehicle, the toll plaza scanner will reject it.
How do I check my FASTag balance?
You can check your balance through multiple channels: the My FASTag app, your bank's net banking portal (if FASTag is linked to your bank account), Paytm/PhonePe (if purchased through them), or by sending an SMS to the issuer bank's FASTag helpline number.
What happens if my FASTag is not scanned at a toll plaza?
If the scanner fails to read your tag (due to low battery in the reader, tag damage, or windshield tinting), the toll operator should let you through and charge you via the fallback ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) system. If they insist on cash, ask for an official receipt.
Can I transfer my FASTag to a new car?
No. When you sell or scrap a vehicle, you must close the existing FASTag account and get a new FASTag issued for the new vehicle. The ₹200 security deposit from the old tag is refundable.
