Car Loan EMI Estimator
A car loan is secured against the vehicle you buy. Banks and NBFCs fund 80% to 90% of the on-road price for new cars and less for used cars. This tool estimates monthly EMI, total interest, and how prepayments change the schedule.
How to use this calculator
Start with on-road price, not ex-showroom. Include registration, insurance, and accessories you plan to finance. Enter the down payment in rupees. Loan value is the amount you borrow, and interest is calculated on that amount. If you edit loan value, car price changes so the down payment stays the same. Most lenders want 10% to 20% from your side on new cars.
Use the annual rate from your sanction letter. New car rates often sit between 8.5% and 12% depending on CIBIL score, employer category, and lender. Used car loans usually cost 1% to 3% more.
Pick tenure between 1 and 7 years. Longer tenure cuts EMI but raises total interest sharply. Keep car EMI within 15% to 20% of net monthly income after other loans.
If you expect an annual bonus, model a prepayment. Even one extra principal payment each year can remove several months from the schedule. Compare two scenarios before signing.
Check whether the lender bundles motor insurance or extended warranty into the loan. These add-ons inflate principal without changing the car price on paper. Ask for a loan schedule that separates insurance premium from vehicle finance.
Car loan EMI formula
EMI = [P × R × (1+R)^N] / [(1+R)^N − 1] P = loan principal after down payment R = monthly rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) N = tenure in months Example: ₹8 lakh loan at 9.5% for 5 years (60 months). R ≈ 0.7917%. EMI ≈ ₹16,800. Total payment ≈ ₹10.08 lakh, interest ≈ ₹2.08 lakh. Processing fee and insurance bundled into the loan raise effective cost even when EMI looks affordable.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I miss a car loan EMI?
The lender charges a late fee and reports the delay to credit bureaus. Repeated defaults can lead to vehicle repossession after notice.
Can I prepay my car loan?
Most banks allow prepayment after 6 to 12 months. Some charge 1% to 5% foreclosure fee on the outstanding principal for fixed-rate loans.
Does longer tenure mean cheaper loan?
Longer tenure lowers EMI but increases total interest. A 7-year loan on the same amount often costs far more than a 4-year loan.
New vs used car loan rates?
Used car loans carry higher rates and lower LTV because resale value is harder to predict. Check age and mileage limits in the lender policy.
Is zero down payment available?
Some dealers offer 100% finance promotions, but interest and insurance add-ons are often higher. Read the loan agreement for bundled products.
Should I take dealer finance or bank loan?
Compare APR including processing fee, not just the headline rate. Bank pre-approval gives a baseline to negotiate dealer offers.
Does car loan affect home loan eligibility?
Yes. Existing car EMI counts in FOIR when you apply for a home loan. Close or prepay smaller loans if you plan to buy property soon.
