Aadhaar biometric data (fingerprints and iris scans) is used for identity verification at banks, telecom operators, government offices, and other entities. While this is convenient, it also means your biometrics could potentially be misused if someone has access to your fingerprint data and your Aadhaar number.

UIDAI (the Unique Identification Authority of India) provides a feature to lock your biometrics when you are not actively using them. When locked, no entity can authenticate you using fingerprint or iris scanning. You can unlock temporarily whenever you need to use biometric authentication, and it automatically locks again.

Why You Should Lock Your Biometrics

  • Prevents unauthorized authentication: No one can use your fingerprints for Aadhaar-based KYC without your knowledge.
  • OTP still works: Locking biometrics does not affect OTP-based authentication. You can still verify your Aadhaar for online services, tax filing, and bank processes using OTP.
  • Easy to unlock: You can unlock in under 2 minutes when needed, and it auto-locks again after a short period.

Method 1: Using the MyAadhaar Portal

Step 1: Open MyAadhaar

  1. Visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.
  2. Click Login and enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number or 16-digit VID.
  3. Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
  4. Complete the CAPTCHA if prompted.

Step 2: Navigate to Lock/Unlock Biometrics

  1. Once logged in, look for the Lock/Unlock Biometrics option in the dashboard or services menu.
  2. You will see the current status of your biometrics (Locked or Unlocked).

Step 3: Lock or Unlock

  • To Lock: Click Lock Biometrics. Confirm with OTP. Your biometrics are now locked. No fingerprint or iris authentication will work until you unlock.
  • To Unlock: Click Unlock Biometrics. Confirm with OTP. Your biometrics are temporarily unlocked.

IMPORTANT

A biometric "Unlock" is typically temporary and automatically locks again after approximately 10 minutes. This gives you enough time to complete one KYC transaction at a bank, telecom shop, or government counter.

Method 2: Using the mAadhaar App

The official mAadhaar app provides the same functionality on your smartphone:

  1. Download the mAadhaar app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Only use the official app published by UIDAI.
  2. Open the app and set up your profile using your Aadhaar number and OTP.
  3. On the home screen, tap Biometric Lock.
  4. Toggle the switch to Lock or Unlock.
  5. Confirm with OTP.

TIP

The mAadhaar app is faster for quick unlock-and-lock cycles. If you frequently need biometric authentication (e.g., you work at a bank and do KYC often), keeping the app handy saves time.

Using Virtual ID (VID) for Extra Privacy

If you want to avoid sharing your actual 12-digit Aadhaar number during KYC, you can generate a Virtual ID (VID):

  1. Log in to MyAadhaar.
  2. Navigate to VID Generator or find it in the services section.
  3. Click Generate VID. A 16-digit number will be sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile.
  4. Use this VID instead of your Aadhaar number at KYC counters or on portals that accept VID.

The VID maps back to your Aadhaar internally but the verifying entity never sees your actual Aadhaar number. You can generate a new VID at any time, which automatically revokes the old one.

Common Problems and Troubleshooting

ProblemSolution
Fingerprint keeps failing at bank/KYC counterFirst check that your biometrics are actually unlocked. If they are unlocked and still failing, it may be a hardware issue. Ask the operator to clean the fingerprint scanner. If your fingers are worn or dry, try using the iris scanner instead.
OTP not received for lock/unlockEnsure your Aadhaar-linked mobile is active and has network. If you changed your number, update it at a UIDAI enrolment centre first.
"Biometrics are already locked" errorThis means a previous lock is still active. You do not need to lock again. If you need to unlock, proceed directly to the unlock option.
mAadhaar app crashes or does not loadUpdate the app to the latest version. Clear cache and data if the issue persists. Ensure you have a stable internet connection.
Unlocked but auto-locked before I finished KYCThe 10-minute window may have expired. Unlock again and inform the KYC operator to proceed quickly.

When to Unlock (and When Not To)

ScenarioKeep Locked?
Normal daily activities, online banking, UPIYes - these use PIN/OTP, not biometrics
Opening a new bank account (biometric KYC)Unlock temporarily
Getting a new SIM cardUnlock temporarily (many telecom shops use fingerprint KYC)
Government service like pension, ration cardUnlock temporarily if biometric is required
Filing income tax onlineYes - ITR filing uses PAN/Aadhaar OTP, not biometrics

NOTE

Even when biometrics are locked, you can still authenticate using OTP for services that allow it. The lock only affects fingerprint and iris-based authentication.

Frequently asked questions

Should I keep biometrics locked?
Yes, it is recommended. Lock your biometrics when you are not using them for KYC. OTP-based authentication still works when biometrics are locked, so most online services remain unaffected.
Do I need the registered mobile?
Yes. Both locking and unlocking require an OTP sent to the mobile number registered with your Aadhaar.
What is a Virtual ID (VID) and should I use one?
A VID is a temporary 16-digit number that can be used instead of your Aadhaar number for authentication. It adds a layer of privacy because the entity verifying your identity never sees your actual Aadhaar number. You can generate a new VID anytime.
Does locking biometrics affect e-KYC for bank accounts or SIM cards?
If the KYC process uses fingerprint or iris scanning, yes, it will fail while locked. Simply unlock temporarily, complete the KYC, and lock again. OTP-based e-KYC is not affected.
Can someone misuse my biometrics if they are unlocked?
Theoretically, if someone has a copy of your fingerprint and your Aadhaar number, they could attempt authentication. Locking prevents this. Real-world misuse is rare but locking is a sensible precaution.
