How to Merge Two UAN Numbers

Merge duplicate UAN numbers on the EPFO member portal so all your PF balances are consolidated under one account. Covers eligibility, process, and what...

Many people end up with two or more UAN (Universal Account Number) numbers because different employers generated separate UANs instead of using the existing one. This results in PF balances being split across multiple accounts, making it harder to track your total PF corpus and file withdrawal or transfer claims.

Merging your UANs consolidates all your PF member IDs under one UAN. After merging, you can see your complete PF history, service period, and balance in one place.

Why Duplicate UANs Happen

CauseHow It Happens
New employer created a new UANHR did not ask for your existing UAN during onboarding
Aadhaar/PAN not linked to old UANSystem could not find your existing UAN during verification
Name mismatch between jobsDifferent name spellings caused the system to treat you as a new person
Company used a different PF trustSome companies have exempt trusts that may generate separate IDs

Before You Start

Requirements for UAN merge

0 of 5 ready · saved on this device only

Step 1: Identify your UANs and choose the primary

  1. Check your salary slips from different employers - each will show a UAN and member ID.
  2. Log in to the EPFO member portal using each UAN to verify the balances.
  3. Choose which UAN to keep as your primary (preferably the one with your current employer, approved KYC, and the most recent activity).

TIP

Before merging, ensure your primary UAN has approved KYC (Aadhaar and PAN verified with green ticks). If KYC is pending, complete it first using our EPF KYC pending fix guide.

Step 2: Submit the merge request

  1. Log in to the EPFO member portal with your primary UAN.
  2. Navigate to Online Services > One Member - One EPF Account (Transfer Request).
  3. You will see your current and previous member IDs.
  4. Select the member ID from the other UAN that you want to merge into your primary UAN.
  5. Choose whether your current employer or previous employer should attest the transfer.
  6. Click Submit and authenticate with an OTP.

NOTE

If you do not see the other UAN's member IDs in the transfer portal, it may mean the other UAN is not linked to the same Aadhaar/PAN. You will need to contact the EPFO regional office with both UANs and your ID proofs.

Step 3: Employer attestation

After you submit the transfer request:

  1. The selected employer (current or previous) receives a notification to attest the request.
  2. Contact your HR department and ask them to approve the transfer on the employer portal.
  3. Some employers have a weekly or monthly processing cycle for such requests. Follow up if it remains pending.

Step 4: EPFO processing

After employer attestation:

  1. The request goes to the EPFO field office for processing.
  2. EPFO verifies the details and merges the member IDs under your primary UAN.
  3. Processing time: 15 to 30 days after employer attestation.
  4. You will receive an SMS notification when the transfer/merge is completed.

Step 5: Verify the merge

After receiving the completion SMS:

  1. Log in to the member portal with your primary UAN.
  2. Go to Service History - you should now see member IDs from both employers under one UAN.
  3. Check the passbook to verify that the PF balance from the old member ID has been transferred.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I have two UANs?
This usually happens when a new employer generates a new UAN instead of using your existing one. Sometimes incorrect Aadhaar or PAN details cause the system to create a new account.
Will I lose my PF balance?
No. Merging consolidates the balances from all member IDs under one UAN. No money is lost in the process.
Can I merge more than two UANs?
Yes. You can merge multiple UANs into one primary UAN. Each merge request handles one pair at a time, but you can submit multiple requests.
Does my employer need to approve the merge?
The merge request itself goes to EPFO. However, your current employer may need to update your member ID linking in their system after the merge.
How long does merging take?
Once submitted with approved KYC, the merge typically takes 15 to 30 days for EPFO processing. Complex cases with multiple member IDs may take longer.
