You can withdraw your Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) online without visiting an EPFO office. Whether you need a partial advance for a medical emergency or a full settlement after leaving a job, the entire process is digital and typically takes under 15 minutes to submit.
Before you apply, you need to understand the three different claim forms and choose the right one. Submitting the wrong form is one of the most common reasons for claim rejection.
Which Form Do You Need?
| Form | Purpose | When to Use | Waiting Period | Withdrawal Limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Form 31 | Partial Advance | While currently employed, for specific purposes | None (varies by purpose) | Varies: e.g., up to 6 months' basic salary for medical, 36 months for housing |
| Form 19 | Full PF Settlement | After leaving a job permanently | 2 months after your Date of Exit | Entire PF balance (employer + employee share + interest) |
| Form 10C | Pension Withdrawal | To withdraw the EPS (pension) portion after quitting | 2 months after Date of Exit | Entire EPS balance (only if total service is under 9 years 6 months) |
WARNING
TDS on PF Withdrawal: If you withdraw your full PF balance (Form 19) before completing 5 continuous years of EPF membership and the amount exceeds ₹50,000, TDS will be deducted. With PAN linked: 10% TDS. Without PAN linked: a massive 34.6% TDS. If your total annual income is below the taxable limit, you can claim this TDS back as a refund when filing your ITR by submitting Form 15G/15H at the time of claim.
Prerequisites: What You Need Before Applying
Before you can submit any claim, your EPFO account must have all of the following in place:
- UAN must be active and you must know your login credentials.
- Aadhaar must be linked and verified against your UAN (shows green tick in KYC section).
- Bank account must be verified (approved by employer, verified by bank, shows green tick).
- PAN must be linked to avoid the higher TDS rate.
- Date of Exit must be updated (for Form 19 and 10C only). Your employer should update this. If they have not, see the troubleshooting section below.
TIP
You can check all your KYC statuses by logging into the EPFO portal and going to Manage > KYC. Every field should show "Verified" or "Digitally Approved." If any field shows "Pending for Employer Approval," see our EPF KYC Pending Fix guide.
Step 1: Log in to the EPF Portal
Visit the EPFO Member e-Sewa portal. Log in using your UAN (Universal Account Number), password, and the CAPTCHA code. If you have forgotten your password, click "Forgot Password" and reset it using your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
Step 2: Verify your KYC status
- Click on the Manage tab in the top menu.
- Select KYC from the dropdown.
- Ensure your Aadhaar, PAN, and Bank Account all show green ticks under the "Verified" column.
- If any KYC is pending, you must get it approved before proceeding. Claims submitted without fully verified KYC will be rejected automatically.
Step 3: Go to Online Services
- Click on the Online Services tab.
- Select Claim (Form-31, 19, 10C & 10D) from the menu.
Step 4: Verify your bank account
A new screen will display your member details including your name, date of birth, father's name, and linked bank account.
- Enter the last 4 digits of your linked bank account number in the verification field.
- Click Verify and accept the certificate of undertaking.
- Click on Proceed for Online Claim.
Step 5: Choose your withdrawal form
Under the "I Want To Apply For" dropdown, select the appropriate claim type:
- PF Advance (Form 31): For partial withdrawals while employed. You will need to select the specific purpose (medical, marriage, housing, education, etc.) and enter the requested amount.
- Only PF Withdrawal (Form 19): For full PF settlement after leaving a company.
- Only Pension Withdrawal (Form 10C): For withdrawing the EPS pension component.
- PF and Pension both (Form 19 + 10C): To withdraw everything in one go.
WARNING
You can only apply for Form 19 and Form 10C if your Date of Exit has been updated in the portal AND at least two months (60 days) have passed since your last working day. If the Date of Exit field is blank, your employer has not updated it. Contact them first.
Step 6: Submit the claim
- For Form 31 (Advance): Select the purpose, enter the amount you need, and upload a scanned copy of your blank cheque or passbook front page (your name and account number must be clearly visible).
- For Form 19/10C: Verify the displayed settlement amounts and upload the cheque/passbook scan.
- Click on Get Aadhaar OTP.
- Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Submit the claim.
You will see a tracking reference number on screen. Save this. You will also receive an SMS confirmation.
Expected Timelines
| Claim Type | Typical Processing Time | Maximum Time |
|---|---|---|
| Form 31 (Advance) | 3-7 working days | 20 days |
| Form 19 (Full PF) | 7-15 working days | 20 days |
| Form 10C (Pension) | 7-15 working days | 20 days |
| Combined Form 19 + 10C | 10-20 working days | 30 days |
Common Reasons for Claim Rejection
Track your claim status at Online Services > Track Claim Status. If rejected, the reason will be shown. Here are the most frequent causes:
- "KYC not approved": Your Aadhaar, PAN, or Bank details are not fully verified. Fix the KYC first.
- "Date of Exit not available": Your employer has not updated your exit date. Contact HR or raise a grievance on EPFiGMS.
- "Cooling period not completed": You submitted Form 19 or 10C before 60 days had passed since your Date of Exit.
- "Bank account mismatch": The name on your bank account does not match the name on your UAN exactly. Contact your bank to get a name correction, or update your name in EPFO.
- "Aadhaar seeding failed": Your Aadhaar number is linked but the name or DOB does not match EPFO records. See our DOB update guide.
Troubleshooting
My employer has not updated the Date of Exit: If your employer is unresponsive, you can raise a grievance on the EPFiGMS portal. Select "PF Withdrawal" as the category and mention that the Date of Exit has not been updated by the employer. The EPFO regional office will typically contact the employer within 7-10 days.
The "Claim" option is greyed out or not clickable: This usually means your KYC is incomplete. Go to Manage > KYC and check which document is not verified. Another possibility: you have multiple UANs and are logged into the wrong one.
I submitted my claim but the money has not arrived after 20 days: Check the claim status on the portal. If it shows "Settled" but the money has not hit your account, the issue is with your bank. Contact your bank with the UTR (transaction reference number) shown in the claim details.
Form 31 says I am "not eligible" for the advance: Each advance purpose has minimum service requirements. For example, housing advance requires 5 years of EPF membership, while medical advance has no minimum service requirement. Check the eligibility rules for your specific purpose on the EPFO website.
