Atal Pension Yojana (APY) is a government-backed pension scheme for workers in the unorganised sector, though other eligible citizens with a bank account can also join within the age window. Contributions are auto-debited from your savings account until age 60, after which you receive a fixed monthly pension based on the tier you picked.
Eligibility basics
- Age 18 to 40 at joining
- Savings bank account that supports APY auto-debit
- Aadhaar and mobile number for KYC / OTP
- Not already holding an APY account (one APY per person)
IMPORTANT
APY is different from NPS Tier I. APY guarantees a defined pension band; NPS market-links your corpus. Compare both before you commit if you can contribute more flexibly.

Step 1: Decide pension amount
Use the bank's APY chart or the official PFRDA / NSAP materials to see monthly contribution for your age and target pension. Younger joiners pay less each month for the same pension tier.
Official scheme information is published via NPSCRA / APY pages and your bank's APY microsite.
Step 2: Open through net banking (typical bank flow)
- Log in to your bank's net banking or app.
- Find Insurance / Government schemes / Atal Pension Yojana.
- Authenticate with OTP.
- Select pension amount and contribution frequency (monthly is common).
- Add nominee details.
- e-Sign / accept standing instruction for auto-debit.
- Download the acknowledgement with PRAN / APY account reference.
If your bank has no online option, fill the APY form at the home branch with the same details.
Step 3: After account opening
- Maintain balance before the debit date.
- Update nominee if family status changes.
- Track statements in net banking or APY/NPSCRA inquiry services your bank shares.
- Do not open a second APY in another bank.
TIP
Set a calendar reminder for salary credit day plus APY debit day so returns do not bounce during tight months.
Exit and family pension (high level)
- At 60, pension starts as per the chosen tier.
- On the subscriber's death after 60, spouse may receive the same pension, with corpus rules thereafter as per scheme.
- Early exit before 60 is restricted except specific cases (such as death of subscriber) under APY regulations. Read the exit circular before assuming you can withdraw like a savings account.
APY vs NPS vs EPF
If you already have EPF through a job, APY can still be opened subject to bank checks, but prioritise understanding total deduction load. NPS offers flexible contributions and market-linked returns; APY offers defined pension bands with stricter exit rules. Pick APY when you want a simple guaranteed pension target and can protect the monthly debit.
Spouse and nominee hygiene
Keep nominee details updated. On the subscriber's death, clear nominee data speeds family claims. If your bank migrates account numbers after a merger, re-confirm the APY standing instruction so contributions do not silently fail.
Realistic timelines
Most people lose time waiting on OTP issues, unclear scans, or a portal outage rather than on the core form itself. Build a small buffer into your plans. If a visa, loan, or registration appointment depends on this document, start at least one or two weeks earlier than the brochure minimum.
Keep a folder (phone and laptop) with:
- Application / acknowledgment PDF
- Fee receipt or UTR
- Identity proofs used in the upload
- Screenshots of status pages with dates visible
When a helpdesk asks for proof, you should be able to send it in one email without hunting through WhatsApp.
If the portal is down
Official sites in India often slow down on weekday evenings and near due dates. Try early morning, switch browsers, or use a less congested network. Prefer the gov.in domain even when a third-party site claims to be faster. If money was debited without an acknowledgment, wait for the stated reconciliation window and contact the listed support channel with the bank reference before you pay again.
After you finish
Update every dependent record that still shows old data: DigiLocker, employer HRMS, bank KYC, insurer, and any travel profile. A finished application that never propagates to the places you actually use will feel unfinished the next time you need it in a hurry.
