Linking your Permanent Account Number (PAN) with your Aadhaar card is mandatory for almost all Indian citizens. If you missed the original deadline, your PAN is currently marked as "inoperative" in the Income Tax Department's database.

To make your PAN operative again, you must pay a late fee of Rs 1,000 and then submit the linking request. After successful linking, PAN reactivation takes approximately 30 days. Here is the complete step-by-step process.

Who is Exempt from Linking?

You do not need to link PAN and Aadhaar if you fall into one of these categories:

CategoryReason for Exemption
Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)Aadhaar is issued only to Indian residents
Not a citizen of IndiaAadhaar is for Indian citizens and long-term residents only
Super senior citizens (aged 80+)Exempt to avoid inconvenience
Residents of Assam, Meghalaya, and J&KLegacy exemption from the Aadhaar Act

Everyone else must link them. This includes all salaried employees, freelancers, business owners, and even individuals with zero taxable income who hold a PAN.

Step 1: Pay the Rs 1,000 Late Fee

Before you can link, you must pay the penalty fee on the Income Tax portal. Do not skip this step. If you try to link without paying, the portal will simply block the request.

  1. Visit the Income Tax e-Filing portal.
  2. Under Quick Links on the left side, click on Link Aadhaar.
  3. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar Number and click Validate.
  4. A pop-up will state that payment details are not found. Click Continue to Pay Through e-Pay Tax.
  5. Enter your PAN again, confirm it, and enter your mobile number to receive an OTP.
  6. After OTP verification, click Continue.
  7. You will see different payment tiles. Select the Income Tax tile and click Proceed.
  8. Fill the challan details:
    • Assessment Year: Select the current ongoing assessment year (e.g., AY 2026-27 for FY 2025-26).
    • Type of Payment (Minor Head): Select Other Receipts (500).
    • The amount of Rs 1,000 will be pre-filled under the "Others" row.
  9. Click Continue.
  10. Choose your payment method (Net Banking, Debit Card, UPI, etc.) and complete the payment.
  11. Download and save the challan receipt (BSR code and challan serial number). You may need this if the payment does not reflect automatically.

WARNING

Selecting the wrong Assessment Year or Minor Head is the most common reason payments fail to be recognized. Ensure you select "Other Receipts (500)" under Minor Head. Do NOT select "Income Tax (Advance Tax)" or any other option.

Step 2: Wait for Payment to Reflect

This is the step most people skip, causing unnecessary frustration.

Payment MethodTypical Reflection Time
UPI30 minutes to 24 hours
Net Banking30 minutes to 48 hours
Debit Card24 to 72 hours
NEFT/RTGS24 to 72 hours

IMPORTANT

Do not attempt to link on the same day you pay. Many banks take up to 4-5 working days to report the challan payment to the Income Tax portal. If you try to link too early, the portal will say "payment details not found" and you may end up paying Rs 1,000 a second time (the duplicate payment refund takes 4-6 months).

Step 3: Submit the Linking Request

Once the payment has been reflected (wait at least 24-48 hours):

  1. Go back to the e-Filing portal homepage.
  2. Click on Link Aadhaar again under Quick Links.
  3. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar Number and click Validate.
  4. This time, a pop-up should say "Your payment details are verified." Click Continue.
  5. Enter your Name exactly as it appears on your Aadhaar card and your mobile number.
  6. Check the box "I agree to validate my Aadhaar details." (If your Aadhaar only has a year of birth instead of a full date, check that additional box too.)
  7. Click Link Aadhaar.
  8. Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number and click Validate.
  9. You will see a success message stating your request has been sent to UIDAI for validation.

Step 4: Check Linking Status

The UIDAI validation usually takes a few hours to a few days.

  1. Go to the e-Filing portal homepage.
  2. Under Quick Links, click on Link Aadhaar Status.
  3. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number and click View Link Aadhaar Status.
  4. If successful, it will display: "Your PAN is already linked to given Aadhaar."

TIP

SMS Method: You can also check status by sending an SMS from your registered mobile number: UIDPAN <12-digit Aadhaar> <10-digit PAN> to 567678 or 56161.

What if Linking Fails Due to Name/DOB Mismatch?

If your name, gender, or date of birth on PAN does not match the details on Aadhaar, the linking request will fail even after paying the fee.

How to fix it:

  1. Determine which document has the incorrect information.
  2. For PAN correction: Use the NSDL/Protean portal. Fee: Rs 110 for Indian address.
  3. For Aadhaar correction: Use the myAadhaar portal or visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. Fee: Rs 50.
  4. Once the document is corrected and updated, try the linking process again on the Income Tax portal. You do not need to pay the Rs 1,000 fee again if the previous payment is already on record.

Consequences of an Inoperative PAN

If you delay linking and your PAN remains inoperative, these restrictions apply immediately:

ConsequenceImpact
No ITR filingYou cannot file pending or new Income Tax Returns
Pending refunds blockedThe department will not issue any tax refunds owed to you
Higher TDS/TCSTax will be deducted at the highest applicable rate (often 20% or more) on your salary, FD interest, dividends, and other income
Banking restrictionsYou cannot open a new bank account, demat account, or deposit cash above Rs 50,000
Property transactionsYou cannot buy or sell property valued above Rs 10 lakh
Mutual fund freezeYou cannot make new purchases or redemptions in existing mutual fund folios

Once you successfully link the documents, the PAN becomes operative again within 30 days.

Common Mistakes

  • Paying the fee twice: If you paid once and the payment has not reflected yet, do not pay again. Wait at least 7 working days. Duplicate payment refunds take 4-6 months.
  • Entering your IRCTC or bank mobile number instead of Aadhaar mobile: The OTP for linking goes to your Aadhaar-linked mobile. This may not be the same number you use for banking or IRCTC.
  • Linking during portal maintenance windows: The Income Tax portal undergoes scheduled maintenance every Saturday and Sunday evening. Avoid attempting the link during these times.

Frequently asked questions

Is linking PAN and Aadhaar still mandatory?
Yes, it is mandatory for all taxpayers in India except a few exempt categories (NRIs, citizens of Assam/Meghalaya/J&K, and super senior citizens aged 80+). If not linked, your PAN becomes inoperative.
What happens if my PAN becomes inoperative?
An inoperative PAN means you cannot file ITR, pending refunds will not be issued, higher TDS/TCS will be deducted on your income, and you cannot open new bank accounts, demat accounts, or make high-value financial transactions.
Is there a penalty for linking now?
Yes. Since the free linking deadline has passed, a late fee of Rs 1,000 must be paid under Section 234H (Minor Head 500 - Other Receipts) before you can submit the linking request.
How long does the payment take to reflect?
Payment made via UPI or Net Banking usually reflects within a few minutes to 4-5 working days. Do not try to link immediately after payment. Wait at least 24-48 hours for the system to reconcile.
Can I link them if my name has a spelling mismatch?
Minor differences may pass due to fuzzy matching (e.g., 'Suresh' vs 'SURESH'). But if the names or dates of birth are significantly different (e.g., 'S Kumar' vs 'Suresh Kumar'), linking will fail. You must correct one of the documents first.
