If your attempt to link PAN and Aadhaar has failed, you are not alone. The Income Tax e-Filing portal has strict validation checks, and the most common causes of failure are name mismatches, incorrect fee payments, and trying to link too soon after paying the late fee. This guide walks you through exactly how to identify the problem, fix it, and successfully complete the linking process.
Why PAN-Aadhaar Linking Matters
Linking your PAN with Aadhaar is no longer optional. If your PAN is not linked, the Income Tax Department declares it "inoperative", which means:
| Consequence | Impact |
|---|---|
| Cannot file ITR | You cannot file your income tax return for any assessment year |
| No tax refunds | Any pending refunds will not be processed |
| Higher TDS | TDS on your income is deducted at the higher rate (typically 20% instead of the normal rate) |
| Financial transactions blocked | You cannot open new bank accounts, make investments above ₹50,000, buy/sell property, or apply for loans |
| Mutual fund transactions frozen | You cannot make new purchases or redemptions in your existing mutual fund folios |
WARNING
If your PAN has already been declared inoperative, linking it with Aadhaar will reactivate it. But the reactivation takes 30 days from the date of successful linking. Plan accordingly if you have any urgent financial transactions.
Step 1: Check your current linking status
Before trying to link again, confirm what the Income Tax portal currently shows.
- Go to incometax.gov.in.
- Click on the Link Aadhaar Status option on the homepage (no login required).
- Enter your PAN number and Aadhaar number.
The system will show one of these statuses:
| Status | What It Means | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| "PAN is already linked with Aadhaar" | You are done. Nothing more to do. | No action needed |
| "PAN not linked with Aadhaar" | The linking has not been done or has failed | Follow the steps below |
| "Your request for linking has been sent to UIDAI for validation" | The request is submitted and pending | Wait 2-3 days, then check again |
| "PAN is inoperative" | Your PAN was deactivated due to non-linking | Link now; PAN reactivates in 30 days |
Step 2: Identify and fix the cause of failure
Cause 1: Name, DOB, or Gender Mismatch (Most Common)
The linking system checks three fields: Name, Date of Birth, and Gender. All three must match exactly between your PAN card and your Aadhaar card. Even minor differences cause an automatic failure:
| PAN Says | Aadhaar Says | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Ramesh Kumar | Ramesh Kumar | ✅ Match |
| Ramesh K | Ramesh Kumar | ❌ Fails |
| Ramesh Kumar | RAMESH KUMAR | ✅ Match (case-insensitive) |
| DOB: 15/06/1990 | DOB: 15/06/1990 | ✅ Match |
| DOB: 15/06/1990 | DOB: 06/15/1990 | ❌ Fails (format issue at data level) |
How to fix: You must correct the details on one document to match the other:
- Correct Aadhaar: Visit the myAadhaar portal to update name, DOB, or gender online (₹50 fee). Takes 3-15 days.
- Correct PAN: Submit a PAN correction request through NSDL or UTIITSL (₹110 fee for Indian address). Takes 15-20 days.
For a detailed walkthrough on fixing these errors, see our PAN-Aadhaar name and DOB mismatch guide.
Cause 2: Late Fee Not Paid or Paid Incorrectly
Since the free linking deadline has passed, you must pay ₹1,000 under Section 234H before the portal will accept your link request. A very common error is paying the fee under the wrong tax head.
Correct payment procedure:
- Go to incometax.gov.in and log in.
- Navigate to e-File > e-Pay Tax.
- Click on New Payment and select Income Tax.
- Fill in the challan details:
- Assessment Year: Select the current assessment year (e.g., 2026-27).
- Type of Payment (Minor Head): Select Other Receipts (500).
- The payment falls under Major Head 0021.
- Enter the amount: ₹1,000.
- Pay via net banking, UPI, or debit card.
- Save the challan receipt PDF. You will need it if there are any disputes.
WARNING
Do not try to link immediately after paying. The banking system takes 4 to 5 working days to report the challan payment to the Income Tax portal. If you try to link on the same day, the portal will tell you the payment is missing. Be patient.
Cause 3: Aadhaar Mobile Number Not Active
The linking process sends an OTP to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. If that number is no longer active (SIM deactivated, number changed), you will not receive the OTP and the process will fail.
Fix: Visit an Aadhaar enrollment center to update your mobile number. This requires biometric verification (fingerprint or iris scan) and cannot be done online.
Step 3: Retry the linking process
Once you have fixed the underlying issue (name corrected, fee paid and reflected, mobile number active), retry the linking:
- Go to the e-Filing homepage.
- Click Link Aadhaar (on the quick links panel).
- Enter your PAN number and 12-digit Aadhaar number.
- If your ₹1,000 fee payment has been detected, the portal will show a confirmation and prompt you to proceed.
- Enter the name as per Aadhaar and date of birth.
- If you have only a year of birth on Aadhaar (not a full date), check the box that says "I have only year of birth in Aadhaar card."
- Click Link Aadhaar.
- Enter the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Submit.
You will see a confirmation message: "Your request for Aadhaar-PAN linking has been sent to UIDAI for validation." This validation takes 24 to 48 hours.
TIP
Save the acknowledgement number. You can use it to check status again after 24 hours on the Link Aadhaar Status page.
Step 4: Verify the link was successful
After 24-48 hours, go back to the Link Aadhaar Status page and check. If it shows "PAN is linked with Aadhaar," you are done.
If your PAN was previously declared inoperative, it will be reactivated within 30 days of successful linking. During this 30-day period, your PAN will still show as inoperative for financial transactions. Plan accordingly.
Common Mistakes
- Paying the fee twice: If you paid once and the payment has not reflected yet, do not pay again. Wait 7 working days. Duplicate payments are refundable but the refund process takes 4-6 months.
- Using the wrong Assessment Year for the challan: Select the current AY, not a past one.
- Selecting the wrong Minor Head: It must be "Other Receipts (500)" under Major Head 0021. Selecting "Income Tax (Advance Tax)" or any other head will result in the payment not being detected by the linking system.
- Trying to link through a third-party website: Only use the official incometax.gov.in portal. Third-party sites cannot process the linking and may steal your credentials.
Troubleshooting
The portal shows "Aadhaar number is already linked with some other PAN": This is a serious issue. It means someone else has linked their PAN with your Aadhaar number, or you have two PAN cards. Contact the Income Tax e-Filing helpline at 1800-103-0025 or visit your nearest Income Tax office with your original Aadhaar and PAN to resolve this.
I keep getting "invalid details" when entering my name: Enter your name exactly as it appears on your Aadhaar card, including middle names and initials. The system is forgiving about capitalization but strict about spelling.
The OTP is not arriving on my phone: The OTP goes to your Aadhaar-linked mobile, not your current number. If you changed your phone number, you must update it with UIDAI first. Also check if your phone has DND (Do Not Disturb) enabled, which can block government SMS.
