Booking a passport appointment in India can be frustrating, especially in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai, or during peak travel seasons (summer holidays, Diwali). When you log into the Passport Seva portal, the earliest available appointment might be months away, or worse, you get a "No Appointment Available" message.
If you need your passport urgently, waiting months is not an option. Here are proven strategies to secure an early appointment slot, arranged from most effective to last resort.
Strategy 1: Know Your RPO's Slot Release Time
This is the single most effective strategy and the one that most people do not know about.
Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) do not randomly release slots throughout the day. Each Regional Passport Office (RPO) releases a fresh batch of appointments (including cancellations from other users and newly opened dates) at a specific, fixed time every single day.
How to find your RPO's slot release time:
- Go to the Passport Seva homepage.
- Look at the left sidebar for Appointment Availability Status.
- Select your Passport Office (e.g., RPO Delhi, RPO Mumbai, RPO Bangalore) and click Check Appointment Availability.
- A table will show the next available dates for all PSKs in that region.
- Look at the top of this table. It will explicitly state: "Appointments for the next few days will be released at [TIME] sharp."
Common RPO slot release times (these change periodically, always verify on the portal):
| RPO | Typical Release Time |
|---|---|
| Delhi | 3:00 PM or 4:00 PM |
| Mumbai | 4:00 PM |
| Bangalore | 2:30 PM or 3:00 PM |
| Chennai | 3:00 PM |
| Kolkata | 3:00 PM |
| Hyderabad | 3:30 PM |
IMPORTANT
These times change without notice. Always check the portal directly for the current time. Do not rely on this table alone.
How to use this information:
- Log into your Passport Seva account 10 minutes before the release time.
- Have your application already submitted and the appointment booking page loaded and ready.
- At exactly the release time (down to the second), click Pay and Schedule Appointment.
- Select the earliest available slot and complete payment immediately.
- This is your best chance to grab a cancellation slot for the very next day or within a few days.
TIP
Use a desktop/laptop with a reliable internet connection. The website responds faster on desktop than on mobile during high-traffic moments. Have your payment method ready (keep net banking or UPI open in another tab).
Strategy 2: Widen Your Search to POPSKs
When you select an RPO, you are not restricted to the main Passport Seva Kendra in the city center. The government has opened hundreds of Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) across the country, typically located in India Post head offices.
While the main PSK in a metro city might have a wait time of 45 days, a POPSK located in a suburban post office 20-30 km away might have slots available for next week.
How to find POPSKs:
- On the appointment scheduling page, click the dropdown for Location.
- Do not just look at the first option (the main PSK). Scroll through every single PSK and POPSK listed under your RPO.
- POPSKs are typically labeled with "POPSK" or the post office name.
- Compare availability dates across all locations.
Example: If RPO Delhi's main PSK at Bhikaji Cama Place shows 60-day wait, check the POPSKs at Rohini, Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad, or Ghaziabad. Suburban POPSKs often have slots within 1-2 weeks.
Travelling an extra hour to a suburban POPSK is almost always worth saving months of waiting.
Strategy 3: Switch to the Tatkaal Scheme
If you have a genuine emergency (or simply cannot afford to wait), switch from the Normal scheme to the Tatkaal scheme.
Tatkaal applications are processed faster (often within 1-3 days after the appointment), and more importantly, they have a separate, dedicated quota of appointment slots. A PSK that shows a 2-month wait for Normal appointments may have Tatkaal appointments available for tomorrow.
How to switch:
- You must pay an additional fee of Rs 2,000 on top of the standard passport fee.
- You need slightly stricter documentation for Tatkaal (often 3 specific ID/address proofs instead of the standard requirements).
- If you have already submitted your form as "Normal," you cannot edit it. You must start a new application, select "Tatkaal" as the scheme, and book a new appointment.
- Police verification for Tatkaal is done after the passport is dispatched (post-police verification), so you get the passport faster.

Strategy 4: Visit the Regional Passport Office (RPO) Enquiry Counter
If you have a documented emergency and cannot find any online slots, you can visit the RPO directly for a manual appointment.
- You must go to the main Regional Passport Office (RPO) of your state, not a standard PSK or POPSK.
- Most RPOs have an Enquiry Counter that operates between 10 AM and 1 PM on weekdays.
- Bring proof of your emergency:
- Medical emergency abroad (hospital letter, doctor's note)
- Death in the family abroad (death certificate, relationship proof)
- Urgent university admission deadline (offer letter with enrollment deadline)
- Government/military posting orders
- Bring your submitted passport application form (ARN receipt).
- The Assistant Passport Officer (APO) has the discretionary power to manually allocate an emergency appointment, bypassing the online booking system.
WARNING
Do not abuse the RPO enquiry counter. They will only grant manual appointments for genuine, documented emergencies. "I want to go on a holiday next week" is not considered an emergency and will be refused.
Strategy 5: Keep Checking for Cancellations
If you have already booked an appointment that is months away, do not give up. You can reschedule to an earlier date when cancellation slots appear.
People cancel their appointments every day for various reasons. If you check the portal frequently, especially early in the morning (6-8 AM) or late at night (after 10 PM), you might find a newly vacated slot.
- Log into your account.
- Go to View Saved/Submitted Applications.
- Select your application and click Reschedule Appointment.
- The system will show you the earliest available date.
- If it is earlier than your current date, accept it. If not, cancel the action (this does not count as a reschedule).
Reschedule limits: You are allowed to reschedule 3 times within one year. If you exceed this limit, your application is locked, your fee is forfeited, and you must pay again to book a new appointment. Use your reschedules wisely.
Common Mistakes
- Not checking POPSKs: Most applicants only look at the main PSK in their city and assume there are no slots. Always check every POPSK in the dropdown.
- Refreshing too aggressively at release time: If you spam the refresh button, the portal may temporarily block your IP. Click once and wait.
- Paying agents for "guaranteed" slots: Agents use the exact same Passport Seva portal as you. They simply log in at the release time. Save your money and do it yourself.
- Missing the appointment: If you miss your scheduled appointment without rescheduling, it counts as one of your 3 reschedule attempts being used.
