After your appointment at the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK), your application enters the police verification phase. In this phase, local police visit your residential address to verify your identity and address details. Until this is complete and reported back to the Passport Office, your passport will not be printed.
The good news: police verification has become significantly faster in most metro cities thanks to the mPassport Police App, which allows police officers to complete verification digitally on tablets. In many cases in cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi, PVC completes within 3-7 days. However, delays still happen, especially in smaller towns or when there are address discrepancies.
Understanding the Timeline
According to the Passport Citizen Charter, police verification should be completed within 21 days of the request being sent to local police. Here is what the process looks like:
| Stage | Typical Timeline |
|---|---|
| PSK appointment and application submission | Day 0 |
| File sent to Superintendent of Police (SP) | Day 1-3 |
| SP assigns to local police station | Day 3-7 |
| Police officer visits your address | Day 7-14 |
| Report submitted back to Passport Office | Day 14-21 |
| Passport printing and dispatch | Day 21-30 |
TIP
In many states, police now use the mPassport Police App on tablets, which has drastically reduced verification times to just a few days. You will often receive an SMS when your file reaches the local police station.
Step 1: Track status online
- Visit passportindia.gov.in.
- Click on Track Your Application Status.
- Enter your File Number (ARN) and Date of Birth.
- The status page will show the current stage:
| Status Message | What It Means |
|---|---|
| "Application Received at Passport Office" | Your file is at the Regional Passport Office but PVC has not been initiated yet |
| "Police Verification Initiated" | The request has been sent to local police |
| "Police Verification Pending" | Police have received the file but have not yet submitted their report |
| "Police Verification Clear" | Verification is done. Passport will be printed soon. |
| "Granted" | Passport has been approved for printing |
| "Printed" / "Dispatched" | Your passport is on the way via Speed Post |
Step 2: Confirm your address details
The most common reason for PVC delays is that the police officer visited your address and no one was available, or the address details did not match.
Before your police visit:
- Make sure someone is available at the address mentioned in your application during working hours
- Keep your rent agreement, electricity bill, or Aadhaar ready as address proof
- If you live in a gated community or apartment complex, inform the security guard that a police officer may visit for passport verification
- If you have moved recently after submitting the application, immediately visit your local police station with your ARN and updated address proof
WARNING
If the police officer cannot verify your address, they may submit an adverse report or simply leave the file pending. Either outcome delays your passport significantly. You may then need to re-apply or appear at the SP office for clarification.
Step 3: Visit or call the local police station
If your status has shown "Police Verification Pending" for more than 2 weeks:
- Find your local police station - this is the station that has jurisdiction over the address on your passport application, not necessarily the one closest to you.
- Carry these documents:
- Application receipt (printed from the PSK)
- A copy of your application (acknowledgment page)
- Address proof (Aadhaar, rent agreement, utility bill)
- Photo ID
- Ask for the passport verification cell or the officer handling passport PVCs. Politely enquire about the status using your ARN and application copy.
- In many cases, the officer simply has a backlog and will expedite once reminded.
TIP
Be polite and patient. Police officers handle dozens of PVC files alongside their regular duties. A courteous follow-up is far more effective than an aggressive one.
Step 4: Escalate via Passport Seva
If your police verification has been pending for more than 30 days and local follow-up has not helped:
Option 1: Call the Passport Seva helpline
- Call 1800-258-1800 (toll-free) and explain your situation with your ARN ready.
Option 2: File an online grievance
- Go to passportindia.gov.in
- Navigate to Public Grievance or Feedback
- Submit a detailed grievance with your ARN, the date of your PSK appointment, and the number of days PVC has been pending
- You will receive a grievance ID for tracking
Option 3: Write to the Regional Passport Officer (RPO)
- Find your RPO's contact details on the Passport Seva website
- Write a formal letter (or email) explaining the delay, attaching your application receipt
Option 4: Use CPGRAMS
- The Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System at pgportal.gov.in allows you to file a grievance against any government department. This is effective for persistent delays.
Common Delay Reasons and Solutions
| Reason | Solution |
|---|---|
| No one at home during police visit | Ensure someone is available during working hours. Leave a note with your phone number. |
| Address mismatch between application and ID proof | Visit the police station with updated documents. |
| Pending criminal case or FIR in your name | This can delay PVC indefinitely. Consult a lawyer if needed. |
| Officer transferred or on leave | Visit the station and ask which officer has taken over PVC duties. |
| Apartment security did not allow entry | Inform your building security in advance that a police officer may visit. |
NOTE
In urgent travel situations (medical emergency, job requirement abroad), you can apply for a Tatkaal passport which has an expedited process. However, the fee is significantly higher.
