How to Renew Driving License Online

Renew an expired or soon-to-expire driving license on Sarathi Parivahan. Documents, fees, medical form rules, and status tracking.

By HowDoI India TeamLast updated: 30 August 2026

Your Driving License is usually valid for 20 years or until you turn 50 (rules vary by issue date and class). Renew before expiry so you are not caught driving on an invalid card. Most renewals now start on the Sarathi Parivahan portal without a long RTO queue.

When to renew

  • Start 30-60 days before the printed expiry date when the portal allows it
  • Renew after expiry as soon as you can; do not drive until the renewed DL is valid again if your old card has already lapsed
  • Commercial / transport classes may have shorter validity and stricter medical checks. Confirm on the form for your state

IMPORTANT

Driving with an expired DL can lead to challans and insurance claim trouble. Treat renewal as priority paperwork, not a nice-to-have.

Documents checklist

Documents for DL renewal

Step 1: Open Sarathi renewal

  1. Visit sarathi.parivahan.gov.in.
  2. Select your state.
  3. Open Services related to Driving License and choose Renewal of DL.

Step 2: Enter DL details and authenticate

  1. Enter DL number in the format your state uses (often state code + RTO + number).
  2. Enter Date of Birth exactly as on the DL.
  3. Complete Aadhaar OTP authentication when offered.
  4. Confirm that the fetched name, photo, and classes look correct.

TIP

If Aadhaar name spelling differs from the DL, fix Aadhaar or DL data first. Renewal with mismatched KYC often gets stuck at RTO verification.

Step 3: Update address and medical details

  1. Update mobile number and email so you receive status SMS.
  2. If you have moved cities, follow your state's process for address change plus renewal. Some states allow both in one flow; others need a separate address change service first.
  3. Fill Form 1 online. If Form 1A is required, get it signed by a registered doctor, scan clearly, and upload.

Step 4: Pay fee and submit

Typical renewal fee is a few hundred rupees depending on validity period and state. Pay by UPI, card, or net banking. Save the fee receipt and application number.

After submit, status may show:

Step 5: Download renewed e-DL

Once approved:

  1. Download PDF from Sarathi application status.
  2. Refresh DigiLocker Transport documents.
  3. Keep the physical smart card when it arrives. Police may still ask for the plastic card even if DigiLocker is accepted in many checks.

Common problems

  • DL number not found: Try with and without spaces or hyphens. Use the number printed on the card, not an old LL number.
  • Photo upload failed: Compress to under the portal limit (often 50-200 KB) and use a white background.
  • Medical form rejected: Ensure doctor registration number and stamp are visible. Retake the scan in good light.
  • Application pending for weeks: Visit the RTO helpdesk with Aadhaar, old DL, and application printout.

Realistic timelines

Most people lose time waiting on OTP issues, unclear scans, or a portal outage rather than on the core form itself. Build a small buffer into your plans. If a visa, loan, or registration appointment depends on this document, start at least one or two weeks earlier than the brochure minimum.

Keep a folder (phone and laptop) with:

  1. Application / acknowledgment PDF
  2. Fee receipt or UTR
  3. Identity proofs used in the upload
  4. Screenshots of status pages with dates visible

When a helpdesk asks for proof, you should be able to send it in one email without hunting through WhatsApp.

If the portal is down

Official sites in India often slow down on weekday evenings and near due dates. Try early morning, switch browsers, or use a less congested network. Prefer the gov.in domain even when a third-party site claims to be faster. If money was debited without an acknowledgment, wait for the stated reconciliation window and contact the listed support channel with the bank reference before you pay again.

After you finish

Update every dependent record that still shows old data: DigiLocker, employer HRMS, bank KYC, insurer, and any travel profile. A finished application that never propagates to the places you actually use will feel unfinished the next time you need it in a hurry.

Frequently asked questions

Can I renew a DL after it expires?
Yes. You can renew an expired DL online in most states. A late renewal may attract an additional fee. Very long gaps can trigger extra verification at the RTO.
Do I need a medical certificate?
If you are 40 or above, or if your state asks for it on the form, upload Form 1A from a registered medical practitioner. Younger renewals often need only Form 1 self-declaration.
Is a re-test required for renewal?
Ordinary renewal of a valid class usually does not need a fresh driving test. The RTO can still call you for verification if documents look inconsistent.
How long does renewal take?
Online applications often complete in a few working days to a couple of weeks. Track status on Sarathi and DigiLocker for the updated e-DL.
